12 states prone to flood in 2015 – NIHSA

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) on Wednesday warned that 12 states might experience high flood this year.

Greek Finance Minister Varoufakis resigns

Yanis Varoufakis, a self-proclaimed “erratic Marxist” economist who infuriated euro zone partners with his unconventional style and hectoring lectures, had campaigned for Sunday’s sweeping ‘No’ vote, accusing Greece’ creditors of “terrorism”.

“I was made aware of a certain ‘preference’ by some Eurogroup participants, and assorted ‘partners’, for my… ‘absence’ from its meetings; an idea that the Prime Minister judged to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement,” Varoufakis said in a statement. Read more

Farming activities yet to begin in Katsina

A survey on the situations of farming activities in some local governments areas of Katsina State has revealed that most farmers are yet to begin planting.

Southeast governors reject relocation of Boko Haram suspects

Governors from the Southeast zone yesterday condemned the relocation of Boko Haram suspects to Ekwulobia Prisons in Anambra state.

FG Loses $7bn to Deep Offshore, Inland Basin Act, Says Falana

A constitutional lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana, has stated that the fiscal incentives given to the oil companies operating in Nigeria in the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contract Act of 1999 have led to the loss of $7 billion by the federal government.

Falana in a statement on Sunday, called on the National Assembly to repeal the law, which was enacted by the military administration of retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar in 1999. Read more

Don’t Kill PIB, ERA/FoEN Urges FG

The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has described a report by the All Progressives Congress (APC) asking the Muhammadu Buhari administration to discard the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) as unfortunate.

A statement issued by the group on Monday July 6, 2015 in Lagos warned that the report would embolden oil multinationals to continue their impunity which had polluted the Niger Delta and eroded Nigeria’s revenues. Read more

Dino Melaye accuses Tinubu of backing Smart Adeyemi

Senator Dino Melaye, Sunday, accused The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, of offering support for Senator Smart Adeyemi, who is currently challenging his electoral victory at the Court of Appeal.

Melaye, an APC senator, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District at the upper chamber of the National Assembly, told journalists in Abuja that Tinubu had contacted the immediate-past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), to take over the legal battle on behalf of Adeyemi. South African vice president to visit China

South African Vice President Cyril Ramaphosa will visit China from July 13 to 17, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Ramaphosa will come at the invitation of Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao, spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing. Source

Zimbabwe set to benefit from Source Africa participation

Zimbabwe’s export promotion body, ZimTrade has said potential business estimated at $1 million was anticipated following the participation of textile and clothing companies at an exhibition in South Africa last month.

In its monthly newsletter, ZimTrade said for the third consecutive year, it had, together with Zimbabwe Clothing Manufacturers’ Association (ZCMA), coordinated Zimbabwe’s participation at Source Africa, which was held last month in Cape Town. Read more

The government has put land grabbers on notice warning that investigations are underway and anyone found culpable would be prosecuted.

No homosexuality in Kenya, lobby tells Obama

Anti gay lobbyists on Monday morning took to the streets of Nairobi to demonstrate against homosexuality, warning US President Barack Obama against pushing the agenda when he visits the country later this month.

The activists led by the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya chairman Bishop Mark Kariuki stated that the practice is against moral values and would send a wrong message to the youth. Read more

Muslim cleric jailed for trafficking girls to Lebanon

A Muslim cleric charged with trafficking underage girls to Lebanon for sex tourism has been sentenced to ten years in jail.

Sheikh Ali Samoja had been accused of trafficking an under-age girl to Nairobi on unknown dates in July 2011 where she was repeatedly defiled by a Lebanon national. Read more

Egypt to reconsider parts of anti-terrorism draft law

An Egyptian judiciary council has asked the government to reconsider sections of a controversial anti-terrorism draft law before its approval by the president, officials and Egyptian media reported on Monday.

The draft law, which could criminalise reporting statistics on militant attacks that contradict government statements, has been condemned by journalists.

The Supreme Judiciary Council approved most of the draft law, but objected to special terrorism courts for cases it said could be handled by criminal courts. Read more

Israeli Police Officer in Rabbi Bribery Case Kills Himself

Israeli police say a senior officer whom a celebrity rabbi with a following in the United States tried to bribe has taken his own life amid what police denounced as a witch hunt.

The body of Assistant Commissioner Efraim Bracha was found Sunday.

Bracha, Israel’s top police investigator, reported Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto’s attempt to bribe him in exchange for classified information about his charitable organizations. Read more

Shawshank escapee David Sweat will be held in a cell 23 hours a day

The surviving escapee from a prison break and three-week manhunt will spend 23 hours a day in a maximum-security cell, much more confined than he and a fellow murder convict were in the prison from which they managed a getaway, officials said on Sunday.

David Sweat, who was shot and wounded during his June 28 capture, was taken early on Sunday from Albany Medical Centre to the infirmary at the Five Points Correctional Facility in the central New York town of Romulus, the state department of corrections and community supervision said in a news release.
