No fewer than 14 persons were killed by some suspected bandits in Karaye village, Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Sunday.
According to the statement issues by the state police, its spokesman, SP Mohammed Shehu; said the attack was a reprisal against the community for killing of some Fulani they suspect as bandits.
Shehu confirmed that apart from the 14 people killed; 10 others sustained gunshot wounds, with many houses set ablaze by the bandits during the attack.
The police spokesman said, “On November 3, some vigilantes (Yansakai) around Bardoki village in Gummi LGA attacked; and killed nine Fulani on suspicion they were bandits.
“We arrested 11 members of Yansakai who actively participated in the killing of the Fulani; that led to the (latest) incident currently undergoing investigation by the state CID (Criminal Investigation Department) in Gusau.”
He noted that they would prosecute those arrested to serve as a deterrent to others.
Shehu also stressed that they would deal with anyone stimulating trouble in the state.
Meanwhile, one resident disclosed that six of his children were killed after the gunmen stormed the village on motorbikes.
Another said his father and grandfather were killed.
The victims, including women, children and the elderly, were either shot dead, burnt beyond recognition or had their throats slit, the resident said.
Also, dozens of homes were set ablaze and livestock was stolen. .
