1st Jams is here again with the top ten songs that trended across the country this month, October.
It is no longer news that the month of October has been marred with chaos, pandemonium and the agitation for freedom amongst Nigerian youths. The month has been eventful; it had several moments that would make its way into the history books, for several controversial reasons.
Nigerians have continuously aired their grievances online before embarking on a 2-weeks peaceful #EndSARS protest across various states before tragedy emerged.
While the Nigerian government is yet to account for the shooting of peaceful protesters on Tuesday, October 20, a day now dubbed #BlackTuesday, Nigerian disc jockey, DJ Switch alongside several eyewitnesses has maintained that there was a shootout at Lekki Tollgate on that fateful day.
The controversial event has made citizens of Nigeria question their safety in their homeland and they have criticized the leadership for the lack of empathy and insincerity towards the development of the nation.

Equally important, 1st Jams is a weekly publication where the latest songs in the country (occasionally we include artiste in the diaspora) are unravelled. However, on special occasions, we discuss matters affecting our society; this is published to enlighten and educate our audience.
Music is a powerful tool used in promoting cultural values; a weapon designed to create change and a universal language that speaks to the heart and soul of its listeners regardless the tribe, race or religious beliefs. Nigerian artiste and social activist Burna Boy sang ‘Monsters you made‘ with Chris Martins, the lead vocalist of the British rock band, Cold Play.
On the aforementioned single, Burna reminded the leaders that they have failed in building a place where their citizens can call home, an abode where they can create a profound future for themselves and their unborn generations. Through looting and embezzlement of public funds, the politicians have continued to dilapidate the structure of the society, hence the citizens of the country become a menace to the society, transitioning into monsters.
Like his role model and primary influence, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Burna Boy spoke about Nigeria’s broken system. Its been over three decades since Fela released ‘Sorrow, Tears & Blood‘, however, the narrative is still the same.
