25-year-old student kills 60-year-old stepmother with pestle

Najib Umar Shehu, a 25-year-old student at the Federal University of Dutsinma (FUDMA) has been arrested by Katsina State police.

The 200 level student was detained in connection with the murder of his 60-year-old stepmother Asiya Mohammed.

The suspect allegedly had a misunderstanding with the victim, a retired government servant on August 18, 2022. In the scuffle, he attacked her with a stick at their apartment in Ambassador Quarters.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Isah Gambo, in a statement on Thursday, August 25, said: “He went into the kitchen, grabbed a pestle, hit her severally with it on her head…as a result of which she sustained head injuries and was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

In a fit of rage, the suspect also repeatedly struck his father with the aforementioned pestle on his leg. His father sustained several fractures. The suspect has been arrested and has also admitted to committing the crime.

Recall that last year, the command in Katsina apprehended members of two known cult groups who were threatening Federal University Dutsin Ma. The two cults known as Black Axe and Aiye Cult got into a public argument that turned into a fight over a girl. The management of the school, therefore, expelled the student after carrying out thorough investigation.
