40,000 persons infected with HIV in Nasarawa – Report

A Non-Governmental Organisation has revealed that about 40,000 unidentified persons with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV; have been discovered across the 13 local government areas and 18 development areas of Nasarawa State.

Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative disclosed this in Lafia at the end of a five-day workshop to develop 2020 annual operational plan on AIDS; and Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.

The Institutional Capacity Strengthening Advisor of AHNi, in charge of North-Central, Dr Terfa Kene; said the group was working to identity the 40,000 HIV infected persons who had refused to present themselves for testing.

He said once they identify such persons, tested and placed on drugs; it would go a long way in stopping the spread of the scourge.

Kene said, “If we are able to stop the spread of the scourge, it means that we are moving towards achieving a zero per cent spread.”

He, however, urged infected persons to shun self-inflicted stigmatization; appealing to members of the public, particularly health personnel, to stop discrimination against them by not disclosing their status.

Earlier, Mr Olukunle Daramola, Zonal Team Lead, AHNi North-Central, explained that the workshop focused at developing the 2020 plan to address HIV scourge in Nasarawa State.
