The United States of America and China are presently in a technological race on who to first deliver 5G; or as it is more expressively known, Fifth Generation Mobile Network.
Over here in Nigeria, we are having an “Illuminati” type of conspiracy theory on the all-important 5G network.
What makes this time astonishing is the calibre of people at the forefront of this conspiracy. Former Senator, Dino Melaye, had tweeted his near sense of ignorance on the matter.
“Whether it is true or not that they are already laying cables of 5G in Nigeria or not. Govt must not allow it in Nigeria and should take a proactive step in that regard. 4G that is here in Nigeria sef na problem. 3G dey do everything I need I beg… We must watch out…”

The flamboyant senator had restricted his conversation to the alleged health implications of 5G; until the video by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder and president of LoveWorld Incorporated, also known as Christ Embassy, emerged; with diagrams conjuring loads of Don Brown classics.
Oyakhilome, in his grand presentation, alluded that the novel coronavirus and 5G are part of the new world order design.
In the presentation, the end plan would be the emergence of the Anti-Christ. According to the respected man of God, COVID-19 is part of the New World Order; and the emergence of vaccines is the last stage in the dominance.
In fact, 5G is the second domination, through the use of ICT, the new world order will be completed. This is the summation of the entire sermon by Oyakhilome and he has continued the attack against the COVID-19 vaccine.
It is a futile endeavour trying to convince people who are hooked on this theory. Was it not in this same country that some people believed that President Muhammadu Buhari was a clone from Sudan? If people can believe that Buhari is a clone, 5G is definitely an Illuminati-driven enterprise.
Though it may seem pointless convincing the advocates of this new conspiracy of their folly; however, for the record, it is essential and imperative to debunk these claims with common-sensical and superior argument.
First, a look at the claim by Dino.
There is a certainty that technological breakthrough or development comes with intended and unintended consequences. 5G is no exception. There are concerns raised by different scientists on health-related issues. But like most others, cost-benefit analysis must be put forward. What are the benefits of having 5G technology? What are the risks?
The scientists and experts are going to provide answers, while governments will have the final say; after considering the implications carefully. Therefore, the concerns expressed by Dino as a citizen is valid. However, the final say is not with him. As important as Paracetamol is, there are consequences for it.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 20% of US energy is from nuclear source.
So, if Nigeria has the option of generating power from nuclear sources; are we going to reject it because of medical concerns associated with Nuclear Technology?
Now to the concerns raised by Oyakhilome.
His concern is spiritual, and no explanation will suffice to address his concerns. However, history is not on his side. A popular pastor in this country once forbade his members from owning television sets; only for him to use the same technology to preach his gospel. The people opposing 5G have been able to sow seeds of doubt in the minds of thousands. Suddenly, everyone is an expert on electromagnetic radiation and it impacts on health.
5G is here to stay, and in a couple of years; it will become obsolete with more advanced system and infrastructure coming on board.
Already, China is reported to have commenced the development of 6G; even as the world is still yet to make sense of 5G.
This is another distraction from the usual suspects. As for me, I will use the technology whenever it’s available.
