In today’s Get Familiar series, we introduce…(drumroll) Brymo!
Yes, for the first time since Ake festival made its debut, there will be a music concert on the first day of the festival. The concert will be headlined by Brymo, Falana and Adunni&Nefretiti.
Brymo first became a nationwide sensation when he sang the hook to Ice Prince’s hit song, Oleku although he had been singing and composing music since 1999. He was signed to Chocolate City in 2000. Brymo has 5 studio albums under his belt- Brymstone (2007), TheSonOfaKapenta (2012), Merchants, Dealers and Slaves (2013), Tabula Rasa (2014) and on his birthday, May 9,2016 Brymo released his latest album Klitoris.
Born Olawale Ashimi, but prefers to be called Olawale Olofo’ro; Brymo was born on 9 May 1986), in Okokomaiko, Lagos state to an Awori carpenter father and an Egun petty trade mother. Brymo who is the only child of his parents grew up in a multi-faith household. He recorded his first song which he titled Future while he was still in secondary school. In 2002, Brymo formed a music group with some friends called Aliens but the group ran into troubles and disbanded in 2005. He dropped out of LASU, where he was offered admission to study Zoology in his second year due to his father;s inability to pay his fees to pursue a career in Music.
Brymo says he was inspired to create music after listening to his mother sing along to fuji songs. Brymo is known for the difference he brings to music. His latest album which was described by some as an extended love song also tackles social and political issues.
Brymo will be performing alongside the amazing Falana, and Adunni&Nefretiti at Kuto cultural centre in Abeokuta next week Wednesday.
