A 74-year-old man from of Kogi State in Nigeria, Mallam Muhammad Awal, just got married. He wed Mallama Rahmat Muhammad, a divorcee of 45, in Lokoja, the state capital of Kogi on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2022.
After the event, he responded to questions from reporters about why he is getting married for the first time at 74. First, he said his financial situation should take the blame; and secondly, his desire to prevent his spouse from ever leaving him; especially if he is unable to act like a man toward her.
“I have always been afraid I might fail in my duty of care to a spouse if I married; and it is something I fear and don’t want to joke with. I am also afraid of separation from my spouse. I know if I fail to take care of her, she might either leave me or cheat on me with another man, which I would not like. So, to avoid all of that, I dismissed the idea of marriage altogether. But now, Allah has made this a reality.” he said.

The ceremony was graced by friends and family of the couple. They celebrated the newly-weds and wished them a happy marriage life.
