AFCON 2021: Eagles face Sierra Leone in Asaba

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on Sierra Leone in Asaba in a 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in March.

This was disclosed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Nigeria, three time winners of the competition, will host Sierra Leone in the Delta State capital; when the qualifiers for the Cup of Nations commence in March.

The Super Eagles have been placed in Group L alongside Sierra Leone. The other contenders in the group are Benin Republic and Lesotho. At stake is a berth at the next edition of the AFCON to be hosted by Cameroon.

Meanwhile, the NFF, Nigeria’s football governing body has confirmed that the three-time African champions’ clash against the West Africans; will be staged on Friday, March 27.

“We have finally settled for the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba for the qualifying match against Sierra Leone. The match will be played on Friday, 27th March 2020,” disclosed NFF’s Mohammed Sanusi.

Further, the NFF has also revealed that the return leg could be held on Tuesday, March 31. Proposed venue is the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown.

Since their 0-0 draw with Uganda in Asaba; the Super Eagles have remained unbeaten on that turf against Egypt, Seychelles and Zimbabwe.

Nigeria finished with a bronze medal at the last edition of the AFCON hosted in Egypt in 2019. Gernot Rohr’s side lost out to eventual winners, Algeria in the semi-final. Subsequently, they beat Tunisia 1-0 in the third-place playoff thanks to Odion Ighalo’s third-minute strike.
