The Super Eagles have booked a second round spot in the on-going 2019 AFCON with a 1-0 victory over Guinea. The lone goal was scored by defender Kenneth Omeruo in the 73rd minute. The keenly-contested game was played in Alexandria.
By virtue of the victory, the Nigerian side thus became the first side to secure a second round ticket at the tournament.
The 2019 edition of the African Cup of Nations is being hosted by Egypt.
The game lived up to expectations. Both sides began on a bright note.
However, the Eagles had the better chances of an opening half which saw the Guinean goalkeeper pull off a string of saves.
Odion Ighalo was the biggest culprit. The striker missed a couple of clear chances. He also failed to square a gilt-edged chance in the path of Ahmed Musa when the winger appeared clear and certain to score. Incidentally, Ighalo was the hero of the first game, netting the lone goal against Burundi.
Led by Liverpool midfielder, Nabil Keita, the Syli Nationale of Guinea found the going tough against a well-drilled Eagles side. Keita, especially, had a rough time against Wilfred Ndidi. The Leicester enforcer was a constant thorn in his side, leading to Keita eventually making way in the second half.
Coach Gernot Rohr made a few changes to the side that beat Burundi. He restored Ighalo, Ahmed Musa and Leon Balogun to the starting line-up. However, captain Mikel Obi dropped to the bench.
Nigeria will take on Madagascar in the last group game.
