Coronavirus: Alleged driver infected after contact with Italian debunks fake news


A Facebook user identified as Ikwonoebe Jude has debunked claims of being the cab driver who drove the Italian man confirmed to have coronavirus from Lagos to Ogun State.


Several media platforms had reported that the man who was diagnosed with the deadly disease, fled from the hospital he was admitted in and also threatened to spread the virus across Nigeria by taking public transport to various states if his family is not paid N100m.


Jude who however debunked the allegation in a video he shared.


He disclosed that he has not been to Lagos in the past two years. He revealed that he has been with his family in Edo State in the last two days as he described the report as fake news”.

Recall on Friday, February 28, a man identified as Bodunrin had taken to the micro-blogging site, Twitter, to identify himself as the driver who conveyed the alleged coronavirus patient.


The Uber driver had taken to his personal Twitter handle where he shared his details; as well as his phone number. As a matter of fact, the driver, Bodunrin, had disclosed that he had a fascinating time during the trip; chatting and laughing with the Italian passenger.


‘‘I had contact with Italian citizen the day before yesterday. Am an Uber driver. I picked him at the airport. We talk gist and laugh together. We even dine together… My name is Olugbenga Bodunrin. 08136464040’’


In a recent video that surfaced online, the alleged driver has come out to debunk the report. In fact, he stated that he has not been to Lagos since 2018.

Presently, the Coronavirus has spread to over 48 countries globally with several deaths recorded.
