APC Govs say ‘no going back’ on Feb schedule for national convention

The Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), a group of APC Governors, has promised that the party’s national convention to elect new leaders will hold in February.

This was disclosed by the Chairman, Atiku Bagudu who addressed journalists after a meeting of the body in Abuja, Sunday night.

The Yobe Governor said the February timeframe as approved by President Muhammadu Buhari was sacrosanct and would be respected.

He added that APC Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) was in the best position to announce the specific date.

“We are one group of stakeholders and our party respects institutions. The appropriate organ of the party that will announce a date for the national convention is the CECPC”, he said.

“We discussed our upcoming APC convention which I had the cause to address the press after visiting President Buhari in November 2021. He and the party agreed that the convention would take place in February.

“We took inputs about the reviews and we also noted all the misrepresentations in the press; that we seek to correct that the PGF is one united body as you can see evidently from the attendance,” Bagudu said.

Meanwhile, Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Kalu, has revealed the reason he cannot attack Bola Tinubu; the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress as they vie for the 2023 Presidency; also noting that their friendship is deep-rooted.

Orji Kalu, equally important, said this on Sunday, January 16; while exonerating himself from media reports; that he, in a recent interview, attacked Tinubu when he said he would contest against the APC chieftain; for the party’s 2023 presidential ticket if zoned to the South.

The former governor of Abia State, through his media office, said, “I told Nigerians that I would contest against Tinubu if the ticket is zoned to the South. APC is a democratic party that allows every qualified member to vote and also be voted for.

“It is not owned or managed by an individual. If I said I was going to contest against Tinubu doesn’t mean I attacked him. I cannot attack him for any reason.

“It is said that few elements are trying to twist my statement to score a cheap political goal. I am not distracted. My friendship with Tinubu is deep-rooted and I am not quarrelling with him. I am not against his ambition of becoming the president. It is the choice of the party to determine who becomes her presidential candidate,” Orji Kalu said.
