APC queries presidential aspirants on foreign citizenship, consensus

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Screening Committee, on Monday, May 30, began questioning the party’s presidential candidates on ten important subjects, including their dual citizenship status.

Some of the contenders said that the panel asked them if they would be willing to step down for the party’s consensus candidate; which was also chaired by a former National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

Equally important, the ruling party postponed the presidential aspirant screening from May 16 to May 23; but failed to execute the exercise on that day.

The APC stated on page 17 of the N100m nomination form that the contestants would be prohibited from court cases; among other things.

Although there have been speculations that the APC may adopt consensus, Senator Abdullahi, who was elected using this method in March; claimed it would not be possible to elect the party’s presidential candidate in an interview with Voice of America Hausa Service on May 26.

Despite the Chairman’s statement, the party’s National Leader, Bola Tinubu; Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, his Jigawa State counterpart, Badaru Abubakar; the immediate past Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba; Ondo-North lawmaker, Senator Ajayi Boroffice; Pastor Tunde Bakare, as well as Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye were among the presidential aspirants who were screened in Abuja.

The questions the aspirants were asked also included, “Do you have dual citizenship? Are you the subject of investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission or the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission? Have you been arraigned by the Code of Conduct Bureau? And have you ever been convicted for a crime?”

“Will you be willing to step down for a consensus candidate? What is your manifesto? Will you abide by the party’s objectives and manifesto? What is your APC membership status?”
