On Thursday afternoon a commercial bank in Ilara-Mokin, Ifedore LGA, Ondo State, was viciously attacked by armed robbers. Three people were killed, among them an Ondo-based journalist. The journalist was inside his car when the armed robbers stormed the bank. He was later hit by a stray bullet.
The journalist, who is referred to as Afuye, was the Public Relations Officer of Elizade University, which is in the town where the robbery took place. Before his appointment as the university spokesman, he worked at the state-owned Orange FM, Akure.
A policeman and one other person were likewise caught in the sporadic shooting that occurred. This has thrown residents into panic. It has been reported by an eye witness that the robbers came to the bank around 3 pm; and shot into the air to scare as well as disperse those within the vicinity of the bank.
Also the robbers proceeded to use dynamite to blow open the entrance and carted away an unspecified amount of money.
According to the eye witness: “Bank staff and customers who were around for one thing or the other scampered to safety. There was confusion everywhere. A journalist, policeman, and motorcyclist were killed by the gunmen.”
