Asia can teach us a lot about tourism – Tee

Before relocating to South East Asia I noticed that more and more adverts on television talked about vacationing in Asia especially Malaysia.

This song always rang in my head: Malaysia, truly Asia thanks mostly to CNN.

Fast forward to the present: I have realized that Malaysia isn’t the only country in Asia attracting tourists via adverts. Most countries in Asia from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam to Phuket, Thailand are bursting with tourists.

That is why I think Nigeria and Africa, as a whole should study their principles, methods and learn a lot from them. When it comes to hospitality I think Asia tops the list. Yes we can argue that some countries in Africa have fantastic tourist sites but we still have to do more.

I am begging to Nigeria please learn a lot about tourism and cash in on it like Dubai has done because tourism is the best avenue for getting money out the pockets of the people. For instance one shouldn’t just come to Nigeria for vacation there should be packages like visit four countries in West Africa, or see four countries in 8 nights, Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Togo, Ghana etc. so I have complied a few pieces of advice that would help Nigeria become a tourist destination, (I am secretly hoping that Mr. President will read this article and appoint me minister of tourism *winks *)

  1. Security: we cannot be a tourist nation if we haven’t dealt with security. People need to know that they will be safe if and when they visit Nigeria. Meaning Boko Haram, militancy, and all the vices trying to rubbish the name of Nigeria, have to be tackled.
  2. Use What We Have: if I know my people well we will want to construct the first flying saucer in Africa or the world, the first bridge with hundred suspensions or something ridiculous like that. We need to learn to use what we have to earn an income. All around Asia they use what they have, and tourists loveit. For instance one of the things tourist can do in Manila, Philippines is the slum tour, a company called organizes these tours. Don’t we have a lot of slums in Nigeria?Another organized tourist attraction is the motorcycle tour; yes you heard right, okada tour. This had numerous positive reviews on trip adviser. It makes you wonder: isn’t it the same okada that we have in Nigeria and which we see as a menace to society?
  1. Market Our Local cuisine: one of the attractions of vacationing in a lot of countries in Asia is that it is very affordable. Number one affordable commodity is Food. Food is so cheap that you can actually have more than a meal for less than a dollar. We say we have very delicious dishes but we haven’t been able to export our local dishes, or attract tourists to Nigeria because of our food festivals. In Asia one of the best tours are the food/market tours, where you walk around with a tour guide tasting foods from different stalls. I think Asia is the king and queen of street food. I for one enjoy their street food, as it is affordable and delicious. A very good combination: affordable + food= satisfaction.
  2. Invest in local artisans: you cannot travel all over Asia without getting at least one piece of art for your home, in remembrance of your adventures. We have very good and gifted artisans; we should learn to export our crafts, beginning with our local arts and sculptures.
  3. Hospitality: like I mentioned earlier, Asia is number one when it comes to hospitality from their hotels to their services, some people may not agree with me and that is fine, but as for me it is the best. And did I forget to mention that it is also very affordable?

Property Bank AD (FA) newI hope Donald Duke former governor of Cross river state comes back, because he must have visited countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and South Korea before turning Calabar, once a sleepy town, to a tourist haven in Nigeria.
