I don’t like to talk about politics, be it about Lagos or the Federal fare. In fact, my father drilled a life instruction into my brain just as I was getting ready to venture into the world. He said, “Stay away from two types of argument – Politics and Religion”.
If I was planning to become a Reverend Sister, I might have had to argue the second topic. But I wasn’t and Boko Haram bombings were the reigning thing at that time. So, I took his words to heart without question.
I’m glad I did. It saved me plenty of headaches. Whenever people start to get passionate about what this pastor said or what that politician didn’t do; I just walk away.
I don’t like wahala, abeg.
Forgive my digression. My father has been on my mind a lot lately. The real gist I want to talk about is the politics of 2023; the upcoming presidential elections and all the drama that has already begun, especially here in Lagos. Did you notice the rumour that the real owner of Lagos wants to become president is starting to catch fire?
So many political bigwigs and wannabes are just going around praising the man and the press is eating it up; with flattering headlines to boot. I don’t know if I should laugh, or I should begin fasting and prayers. 2023 is supposed to be our year of salvation. So, why would anybody wish us a potential journey back into misery?
An interesting fact is that Lagosians, are not charmed by all the antics. Of course, there will be those that will join the Jagaban bandwagon for cutbacks. But I believe the majority of well-meaning Lagosians know better. You can’t have lived in Lagos for years through the past three governments; including the current one and want to have a similar structure ruling over the entire country.
Just imagine having a particular kind of infrastructure; the kind that doesn’t make sense and seems unnecessary (like those new BRT corridors along Lagos-Abeokuta), all over Nigeria. The kind that you can’t challenge because an ancestor insists strongly that the masterplan must be followed. Imagine knowing Nigeria is under the rule of somebody that can watch people be killed without remorse; yet is more concerned about all the millions he’s losing daily from a plaza that should never have existed.
I don’t want to discuss politics. Like a certain senator, I’d rather discuss common sense. I hope affliction does not rise a second time. While we wait for 2023, start now to shine your eyes.
May God help us all.
