Buhari says Boko Haram not about religion in meeting with ICC prosecutor

President Muhammadu Buhari claims that the Boko Haram insurgency has no religious or ethnic underpinnings and that the majority of Nigerians now know the truth thanks to good education.

On Wednesday, April 20, the president announced this when he received Karin Ahmad Khan, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), in the State House in Abuja.

He claimed that via intensive public education, Nigerians had realised that Boko Haram was a religious distortion rather than an Islamic philosophy.

Buhari said: “God is justice. You can’t kill innocent people and shout ‘Allah Akbar’ (God is great). It’s either you don’t know that God at all or you are simply being stupid.

“To say that Western education is unacceptable (Haram) is very fraudulent. That is why we are fighting them and educating the people, and we are succeeding a lot.

“We came to the office when things were very bad but we are educating the people. Education is fundamental. Religion and ethnicity are out of it.

“Some people have just made it a lifestyle to cause confusion, destruction, and death.”

On his part, the ICC prosecutor said that extremism was like cancer “which spreads and can also recede.’’

According to him, what Boko Haram does in collaboration with the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) “is a perversion of religion.”

He said that ICC believed in ‘complementarity which promotes collaboration as against confrontation.”

Khan urged Nigeria, in concert with other Sahel/Lake Chad basin countries, to get the United Nations Security Council to refer the atrocities committed by the terrorist groups operating in the region to ICC for investigation and trial.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has released a list of militants and leaders terrorising people in the region’s south-east (IPOB).

On Tuesday, April 19, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, issued a statement to that effect.

The mysterious shooters, according to Powerful, are members of the local Ebubeagu security team as well as self-proclaimed members of the Eastern Security Network (IPOB’s military wing).

Chibuike Igwe, Paul Udenwa, Okwudili Dim (aka) One Nigeria, Sky from Umutanze Orlu, and a man nicknamed 2men from Umuna were among those named by him.

He also named Akiriko Atta and Kingkom as impersonators of ESN members in the Oru East and Njaba LGAs of Imo State. The man known as Uru; Sky; No one; the Double lion; and a man known as Commander are the impersonators of ESN members in Orsu-Ihiteukwa.

A bounty has also been set on the heads of the aforementioned individuals by IPOB.

The statement added, “IPOB is hereby declaring them wanted, and anybody who can give useful information about them will get a handsome reward”.

It also noted that “IPOB has always told the public that the above-mentioned hoodlums are part of the criminalities going on in our land.

“No criminal should be allowed to demonise IPOB. These agents of darkness and their sponsors should be brought to book to pay for their atrocities.”
