Nigerian artiste and self-professed African Giant, Burna Boy, has sparked intense debates among Nigerians after his claims of greatness divided opinions. Indeed, Burna Boy, whose brilliant run in the music industry had culminated in his nomination for a Grammy Award; had taken to micro-blogging site, Twitter on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 to declare his pre-eminence in the Afrobeat genre.
As a matter of fact, Burna Boy claimed to the best since Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti.
Specifically, Burna Boy had tweeted:
‘‘FACT! I always knew I was and I am THE BEST. Everyone you think is the best KNOWS I’m BEST since Fela Kuti. But @timayatimaya told me something a long time ago that made me not care about being the best. “The World can do without the Best” the world will still spin regardless.’’

However, he did not stop there.
In response to a follower who took him to task on his claims to greatness; as well as the fact that others had paved the way for him; Burna Boy had gone a step further to declare that he was responsible for bringing the respect that Nigerian artistes command today.
Burna Boy claims to be responsible for the respect Nigerian artistes command
‘‘Where were you since 2010-2018? I mean where the fuck are (SIC) you when Afrobeat was struggling to hit the mainstream? The BEST paved the way for you. You came in when the table has already been set and here you’re claiming the BEST since Fela,’’ the follower had queried.
To which, the Grammy nominee had replied:
‘‘Lol. NOBODY paved shit for me. Everybody dey find them own. I bin Out here, if you knew the way they made us look weak by begging and paying the western world to like us you will see that no table was set and I’m the one that brought you the Respect you currently enjoy.’’

Indeed, the claims by Burna Boy had gone viral, leading to a diversity of opinions on the matter. Subsequently, Nigerians had begun to make their thoughts known.
In fact, the debates has remained one of the major talking points on Twitter since Wednesday night.
Equally important, 1st News has put together the views from Nigerians on the contentious claims made by the Delta-born star.
Anything Burna said is none of my business. Let everyone hype themselves. I’m the best Influencer after Google. Nobody should stress me

Burna Boy was/is a kind of consensus amongst his colleagues. They all agree on his talent. Never engaged any OG in the industry who doesn’t. I also saw that consensus in the way they rooted for him. It was unusual because the divides hardly show when it comes to him…

No one is talking about Don Jazzy , Reminisce, Olamide , No one is talking about Psquare , Dbanj , Davido , Banky W , Wizkid , Simi etc
These are the people that built the Nigerian music industry for me & have been consistent , I was stanning Burna on something else entirely .

Wizkid spent almost 4 months in the US last year. Making good music with the powerhouses of Hollywood.
Davido also have been consistent matching records set by the likes of 2face, Psquare and D’banj.
Now we have Burna Boy(Van Dijk) “ 2 season wonder” who thinks he is the Best!

Burna claims no one paved the way.
Dbanj, P-Square, and TuFace put Nigeria on the map during an era where digital music distribution was almost nonexistent.
The audience we/he enjoys today is a result of decades of work put in by talented Nigerian artists…

Been getting messages from people who know i am a die hard fan of Burna Boy asking me my opinion. You know what? Let Burna be Burna, he can’t bend to be what you want him to be. Call it arrogance or whatever. He has his right to his opinion. pic.twitter.com/f1pi16Wm15

My attention has been drawn to Burna's post match comments
We know he's presently having a fantastic season like VVD.
But due respect must be given to great defenders who paved the way:
John Terry Dbanj

What Burna said was in poor taste. It’s not about humility, it’s about respect and he’s shown disrespect for his industry and fans time and time again.
That’s the tweet

I’m trying my best to avoid contributing to these Burna boy’s posts because if i do, my account won’t last. All i want to say is, thank God Angélique Kidjo won the Grammy. Other musicians should learn humility from her!

Very happy Burna boy doesn’t just say these things. He always backs up his talk with action.
He said he’s an African Giant, y’all got mad and laughed at him but he’s been making mad waves since then, even a whole ass Grammy nomination to back it up.
My guy na talk and do.

I wish Burna Boy had won that Grammy. By Gods grace next one.
He’s the one we want to represent us on the world stage if we are being honest. His music is conscious, feel good and very afro beat.

Achebe put it this way; "after eating a heavy meal, Nwanza the bird decided to challenge his chi to a wrestling match".
Of course, his "chi" completely floored him.
That's the same way I feel about Burna Boy. It is clear to even the blind that others paved the way for him.
