Carrot juice: the secret to agelessness, healthy vision

Carrot is scientifically known as Daucus carota. It is a biennial crop which comes in a characteristic orange colour. Although there are different variety of carrots. Also found in shades of purple, yellow, white and red.

Carrots can either be eaten raw, cooked or juiced. Juicing carrot is a more convenient way of taking up the vitamins and minerals found in it. It releases approximately 90% of the nutrients in food.

Juicing can be likened to chewing. The better you chew your food before you swallow; the more nutrients that is released in the juice passing into your digestive tract. And the more nutrients you are able to absorb.

Carrots contain vitamins C, D, E, K, and minerals like potassium, magnesium and calcium, also flavonoids and carotenoids.  It has high fibre content. Beta carotene in carrots are responsible for the orange colour of carrots. They are also the precursors of vitamin A useful for good vision and eye health.

Drinking carrot juice benefits your body in so many ways. Many studies have shown that beta carotene in carrot is crucial for improving immunity in the body, protecting skin and eye health. It also fights free radical damage that can cause various forms of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Health benefits of carrot juice

Prevents ageing

Carrot juice contains abundant vitamins and minerals that help in keeping your skin healthy. It reduces the occurrence of skin related problems, such as eczema. The liquid is particularly helpful in keeping the skin hydrated and moisturized.

Drinking carrot juice can help in reducing cell degeneration, and it can also slow down the aging process. Furthermore, it also increases the production of collagen in the skin allowing it to reduce the visible signs of aging; such as wrinkles and sagging skin.

Boosts immune system

The carotenoids present in carrot juice are antioxidants that boost the body immune system by protecting it from free radical damage, harmful bacteria, viruses and inflammation.

The antioxidants that are responsible for carrot juice benefits include: vitamin C, beta carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin.

Eases digestion

Juicing carrots releases the nutrients and makes it easier for the nutrient to be assimilated into the blood stream. Most high-quality juicers break down vegetables to the point that their nutrients are somewhat “pre-digested”.

Promotes healthy sight

Beta carotene in carrots is converted into vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A and beta-carotene help maintain vision along with the carrots’ fair share of lutein and zeaxanthnin. Both lutein and zeaxanthin work to reduce the risk of age-related vision loss.

Deficiency of vitamin A will lead to night blindness and subsequently loss of sight. Drinking carrot juice can also reduce your risk of cataracts; and muscular degeneration a common cause of age-related vision loss.

Prevents cancer

Carrots contain vitamins A, C, and B6; these three vitamins help fight these free radicals. Free radicals cause oxidation damage to the body and may result to cancer. These free radicals are mopped up by antioxidants in carrot.

Cleanses the liver

Carrot juice cleanses the liver. The liver is the organ responsible for removing toxic waste from the body. The toxins in the liver are released from the system and out of the body; just after consuming this amazing juice.

Promotes healthy heart

Drinking carrot juice benefits heart health by lowering oxidative stress; and improves the body’s defense against various forms of cardiovascular disease.

Carrots also work to lower cholesterol, and boost bile production, which increases the body’s ability to digest fat. This not only helps your digestive system to properly absorb nutrition from your food; but also directly impacts the good cholesterol levels in your body — which protects your heart.

During juicing, it’s important to use a slow speed masticating juicer in order not to overheat the veggies; thereby destroying the enzymes in the process. They are often less expensive and easier to clean than high speed commercial juicers.

The body is able to metabolize nutrients into the body’s cells; especially since uncooked vegetables retain their enzymes. Raw vegetables provide all the enzymes you need for optimum digestion.
