The release of Nollywood veteran, Chiwetalu Agu from the detention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been attributed to the efforts of legal luminary, Mike Ozekhome.
Specifically, this was disclosed by a former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri on Tuesday, October 12, 2021.
1st News reports that Chiwetalu Agu had been arrested by soldiers on Thursday, October 7, 2021. The incident occurred around Upper Iweka in Onitsha where he had gone for a charity mission. The Nollywood legend, who was dressed in a Biafra attire; was accosted by the troops who took him back to their base. Specifically, the Army had accused him of soliciting support for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Subsequently, Chiwetalu Agu was handed over to the DSS for investigation and prosecution.
However, the continued detention of the Nollywood star by the DSS had raised concerns among Nigerians. On Tuesday, October 12, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) secured his release from the DSS.

But Omokri, a former Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan; has revealed the instrumental role played by Ozekhome in Chiwetalu Agu’s release. Taking to his verified handle on the microblogging site, Twitter, on Tuesday; Omokri had hailed the popular lawyer for his efforts in securing the release of the embattled Nollywood veteran; even as he criticized the Muhammadu Buhari administration for turning a blind eye to the actions and utterances of Sheik Gumi; who he described as a bandits’ sympathizer.
“Ever grateful to Mike Ozekhome for being instrumental to the release of Chiwetalu Agu after his unjust and illegal arrest by a repressive regime that celebrates Gumi for promoting terrorist and denigrates Agu for expressing his freedom of thought via his dressing,” Omokri tweeted.
Meanwhile, 1st News reports that the arrest of Chiwetalu Agu had recently sparked more awareness for the Biafra attire.
Notably, barely a few days after his arrest, a Northern lady was spotted using a similar attire to carry her baby on her back.
