Court sentences Naira Marley’s ex-lawyer to jail for bribery

A Special Offenses Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has handed a two-year jail term to Taiwo Oreagba, Naira Marley’s former lawyer, for soliciting N4 million bribe.

After a two-year trial, Ms. Oreagba, who had defended the musician Naira Marley, was found guilty.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) first brought her before Justice Sherifat Solebo of the Special Offenses Court in Ikeja on November 12, 2020.

Oluwatoyin Taiwo, the judge, however, discharged the lawyer on a second count of obtaining money.

Oreagba pleaded not guilty in response to a two-count charge involving an alleged corrupt demand and receiving the N4m through false pretense.

Ms. Oreagba allegedly obtained the N4 million from a man named Henry Umoh. At the time, the EFCC was investigating Kelechi Uka. Then, Ms Oreagba allegedly attempted to sway EFCC investigators into securing Mr. Uka’s release.

Mr Uka is standing trial on offences in connection with stealing at the Lagos State High Court.

Ms. Oreagba was charged with committing the crime in Lagos on or around March 2, 2020.

However, Justice Solebo withdrew from the case during the trial and it was returned to the Chief Judge for reassignment. Justice Taiwo was then given the case.

In October 2021, Mr. Oreagba was re-arrested on the two counts, and the trial before Justice Taiwo began.

Mr. Umoh, then, described how Ms. Oreagba persuaded him to provide the money to her throughout the trial. Also, he asserted that she never gave a receipt.

Justice Taiwo noted in her ruling that Ms. Oreagba did not object to the voice recording’s content. She gave her a two-year prison term for making a corrupt demand of a person.

Notwithstanding, the judge did provide the convicted party the option of a N500,000 fine, noting that she had returned the N4 million to her victim.
