COVID-19: Nigeria on the verge of 5000 confirmed cases

The COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria is bound to hit 5000 confirmed cases; by the time the next round of update is released.

On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, 184 new cases of COVID-19 were reported across Nigeria; thereby taking the total of confirmed cases in the country to 4971, just 29 shy of 5000. In addition, the death toll from the pandemic has risen to 164 while, on the other hand; a total of 1070 patients have been discharged across the country after making full recoveries from the disease.

Out of the 184 new cases of COVID-19 reported across Nigeria on Wednesday, Lagos came out tops once again. The state accounted for 51 new cases. It was followed by Jigawa with 23 cases. Also, four other states – Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, Rivers – and Abuja; the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) racked up double figures in new cases yesterday.

In summary, a total of 21 states and the FCT were responsible for all of the 184 new COVID-19 cases.

This was disclosed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in its daily update on Wednesday. Equally important, the details were released via its verified handle on the micro-blogging site, Twitter.

Discharged: 1070. Deaths: 164,’’ the NCDC disclosed on Twitter.

Meanwhile, total samples tested by the NCDC so far now stands at 29,408.

Also, of the current total of 4971 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria, active cases stand at 3, 737. Also, the agency revealed that no new state has reported a case of COVID-19 in Nigeria. In fact, the 4971 confirmed cases have all come from 34 states and the FCT. Cross River and Kogi stand apart as the only two states yet to report a single case of COVID-19.

A look at the breakdown of COVID-19 cases per state in Nigeria shows Lagos in the lead with 2041 cases; representing 41 per cent of Nigeria’s total infections. Kano is next with 707 confirmed cases and the only state outside Lagos to have recorded over 500 cases. In addition, a total of eight states and the FCT have all recorded over 100 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

They include Katsina, Bauchi, Borno, Jigawa, Ogun, Gombe, Kaduna and Sokoto.
