Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will declare his candidacy for president in 2024 during a conversation with Twitter’s billionaire CEO, Elon Musk, on Wednesday night on the social media site.
Two other persons with knowledge of the preparations for the virtual appearance claimed that DeSantis will announce his intentions on a public audio chat dubbed a Twitter Space. Musk spoke with DeSantis personally and publicly complimented him in the fall. He said he would support the governor if he ran for president. However, Musk has not yet endorsed a candidate and most recently supported Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.), another GOP contender.
Musk, one of the richest individuals in the world paid $44 billion to buy Twitter last year. He admitted that he “reluctantly” supported Joe Biden over Donald Trump for president in 2020. However, he has grown to be a significant player in GOP politics. Last year, he urged his social media followers to back Republicans.

He has echoed DeSantis’s criticisms of “wokeness”, leftist politics gone awry, and of American officials’ handling of the coronavirus pandemic. He declared at one point that his “pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci” in reference to Anthony S. Fauci, the former White House medical adviser, and the custom of identifying one’s gender pronouns.
Musk has also endeared himself to the political right with his move last year to reinstate ex-president Donald Trump’s account. Recall that Twitter suspended the former president in 2021 after a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol over his claims the 2020 election was stolen.
