Nollywood actress, Didi Ekanem has taken to social media to express her fear pertaining to ongoing #EndSARS protest in Nigeria. In a post shared on her Instagram, the actress stated that she is scared that most operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) might give in to armed robbery if their unit is abolished.
She disclosed this on Saturday, October 10.
The actress who revealed that she wants SARS scrapped added that her fear is they may become; ”armed robbers since they were already one in uniform.”
Didi Ekanem wrote;
“#EndSars and provide a better means of protection for us.
”I’m worried that these SARS men will now venture into full-time robbery because they were already criminals in uniform. #endsarsbrutality”
Celebrities including the Nigerian superstars Wizkid and Davido have shown their support for the protests on Twitter.
The Star Wars Actor John Boyega, who has Nigerian heritage, tweeted his frustration at an apparent lack of change within the police.
The #EndSARS hashtag started as far back as 2018.
Also, the National Human Rights Commission published a report into the activities of Sars in May 2019 but critics say little appears to have changed.
An investigation by the rights group Amnesty International investigation published in June accused SARS officers of using “torture as well as other ill-treatment to execute; punish; and also extract information from suspects”.
It documented 82 cases between January 2017 and May 2020.
Amnesty found the group allegedly targeted men between the ages of 17 and 30.
“Young men with dreadlocks; ripped jeans; also tattoos; as well as flashy cars; or even expensive gadgets are frequently targeted by SARS,” Amnesty said.
