A former Minister of Aviation during the President Olusegun Obasanjo government, Femi Fani-Kayode has formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
1st News learned that Fani-Kayode, who was a fierce critic of the current administration, was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari by the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the APC, and governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni on Thursday, September 16, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to the former Minister, he was led by the Spirit of God in his decision; and that he joined the APC to help for the unity of the country; adding that he was against anything that would cause the disintegration of Nigeria.
Fani-Kayode further noted that he was instrumental in the exit of three Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governors to the APC.
The governors he mentioned were Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, Ben Ayade of Cross River State, and Bello Matawale of Zamfara State.
He further said that he has friends across party lines and was wooing the governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, and the governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed to join the ruling party.
In September 2019, Fani-Kayode had faulted the claims that he has defected to the APC.
In a series of tweets, he had insisted that he remains a staunch member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
He described the report of his defection as “false and insulting”; adding that it was nothing but fake news.
Fani-Kayode, however, asked those sponsoring the report to bury their heads in shame, saying he would “rather die than” than join the APC.
He accused the ruling party of failing to protect the nation and its people; as well as faulted the government’s anti-corruption war.
“I am committed to opposing the APC; and those that are in their ranks for the rest of my natural life; and I will never join them no matter what!” he said.
He stressed that he stands for light and truth, saying there can’t be any union between light and darkness.
