FG suspends distribution of N9.2bn clean cook stoves 

Federal Government has suspend the distribution of the N9.2 billion presidential intervention clean cook stoves meant for rural women in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment had disclosed that it has received the sum of N5 billion out of the N9.2 billion approved by federal government for the purchase of the stove. Read more

Man Sells Son For N300k  

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad of Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly selling his 2-year-old son for N300,000.

Investigation revealed that Kanayo Awurum, a painter, from Imo State, eastern Nigeria, allegedly impregnated his girlfriend, Ugochukwu Kelechi, and absconded shortly after that. Read more

Police rescue abducted Kogi commissioner 

The Police in Kogi on Thursday announced the rescue of the state Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Stephen Maiyaki , who was abducted on May 30.The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Shola Adebayo, said in a statement in Lokoja that Maiyaki was rescued at about 2 am from the kidnappers hideout at Abobo village in Adavi Local Government area of the state.

NAN reports that the commissioner and six other persons were abducted at Osara village also in Adavi local government while there to resolve a land dispute. Read more

Man docked for using baboon, snake to rob in Lagos

A 27-year-old man, who allegedly terrorised and robbed people with baboon and snake, was on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, Mohammed Nafiu, 27, whose address is unknown, is facing a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, breach of public peace and robbery. Read more

Choirmaster rapes female chorister in Lagos

A bricklayer and choirmaster, Adewale Babalola, who allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 16-year-old chorister in his church, was on Thursday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused, 36, who lives at No. 11, Maxwell Ijeh St., Aguda in Surulere area of Lagos, is facing a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse. Read more

Media correspondents serving in Imo State, are now living in palpable fear, following the reported kidnap of the head of the reportorial team of News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Miss Chidi Opara, in Owerri.

Court remands student in prison for alleged theft of N10,000 cell phone

A Grade 1 Area Court in Aso Pada, Mararaba, on Thursday remanded a student, Monday Prayer, 20, in Keffi Prisons for allegedly stealing a cell phone valued at N10,000.

The Presiding Judge, Mr Albert Maga, gave the order after the accused, who resides at Mararaba, denied committing the offence. Read more

OPEC heads towards holding output; oil slips under $60

OPEC headed Thursday towards holding crude output levels on the eve of its production meeting, as oil prices slid back under $60 a barrel on concerns that the expected decision would further fuel oversupply.

Ministers attending a two-day OPEC seminar before Friday’s output gathering said they would be happier with prices between $75 and $80 a barrel to boost precious revenues and help balance their budgets. Read more

I renew my pledge to crush Boko Haram – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, in Niger Republic renewed his vow to crush the Boko Haram Islamic sect, saying “five years of the presence of this evil sect is enough.”

Speaking at a news conference in Niger during his first visit outside the country since inauguration, Buhari expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigerian military to overcome and eradicate Boko Haram. Read more

The Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Gesila Khan, has said the criticisms against her before, during and after the 2015 controversial elections in the state mean nothing to her.

Khan said those criticising her did so because they lost the elections, adding that it was normal for losers to give excuses on why they lost. Widespread criticisms had trailed the conduct and outcome of the general elections in the state, especially from members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress. Trailer crushes 10 in Ondo market

No fewer than 10 people lost their lives while many others were injured when a trailer rammed into a market on Ilesa-Akure Expressway at Owena in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday evening.

Confirming the incident to our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday, the Head of Operation of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Jones Malomo, explained that the accident occurred as a result of mechanical fault in the trailer. Read more

Firm sues PDP, Ali, over N70m campaign debt

A firm, Silon Concepts Limited, has sued the Peoples Democratic Party and two officials of its Presidential campaign organisation for their alleged refusal to pay it an outstanding N70m balance for a campaign contract. It filed its suit marked CV/2017/15 before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on Thursday.‎

The plaintiff is demanding full payment for the ‘voice SMS campaign broadcast’ ‎it sent to eligible voters on behalf of the PDP’s Presidential candidate, former President Goodluck Jonathan, before the March 28, 2015 Presidential poll. Read more

Court orders NDLEA to suspend action on Kashamu

A Federal High Court in Lagos has asked the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to suspend all actions on the move to extradite the Ogun East Senator-elect, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, to the United States to face trial on alleged drug-trafficking offences.

The presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, while adjourning hearing in all pending applications on the subject matter till June 19, said on Thursday that status quo must be maintained till all the applications were decided one way or the other. Read more

Tanker crushes FRSC boss, family in Osun

Tragedy struck on Wednesday as a petrol tanker which lost control ran over the car conveying the Coordinator, Federal Road Safety Corps Special Marshal Programme in Osun State, Chief S. O. Adewale, his wife and another occupant.

Adewale died on the spot but his wife and the other occupant of the car, who some said was the deceased’s son, who suffered varying degrees of injuries, were rushed to the hospital.

Adewale was said to be going back to Ife, where he resided, from Owo, Ondo State, when the accident  occurred.   Read more

Dokubo backs Uwazuruike’s Biafra agitation

The Leader of Niger Delta Volunteers Force, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, has described the agitation of the leader of the  Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, as justifiable.

Dokubo-Asari, who said this while speaking with journalists in Owerri on Thursday, said the agitation of Niger Delta and MASSOB was an agitation for self determination.

The ex-militant leader said, “There is no difference between the vision of Niger Delta People Volunteer Force and Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra. I say this because the demand of the Niger Delta and Biafra is a demand for self determination.” Read more

NPF plans 6,000 housing units for junior officers – IG

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, on Wednesday mandated the Police Works Department of the Force to build 6,000 units of modern houses for the rank and file personnel.

Arase gave the mandate at a one-day workshop held for officers of the works department in Abuja. The IG, however, said corrupt officers would not benefit from the project. He said 500 units of the houses should be located in each of the 12 Police Zonal Commands across the nation. Read more

Egyptian Court Adjourns Al Jazeera Journalists’ Retrial To June 11

An Egyptian court on Thursday adjourned the retrial of Al Jazeera television journalists to June 11 for more closing statements by the defence team.

The journalists were charged with aiding a terrorist organisation, a reference to the Muslim Brotherhood, which was outlawed in Egypt after the army ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, amid mass protests against his rule in 2013. Read more

Ex-commissioner Sheds Light On Non-payment Of Workers’ Salaries

Alhaji Mohammed Dan’Azumi, the former Nasarawa State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, on Thursday said the non-payment of council workers’ salaries was due to a shortfall in federal allocation.

Dan’Azumi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia that the reduction in the allocation to the state from the federation account was responsible for the non-payment of two months outstanding salaries. Read more

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has cautioned lawyers, particularly those handling cases at the Election Petition Tribunals to conduct themselves professionally or face disciplinary measures.

Pele said Thursday amid the FIFA corruption scandal that football had to be protected.
