Football legend Pele hospitalised again

Brazilian football legend Pele has been hospitalized again, but there is “no emergency,” his daughter said. The 82-year-old icon has been undergoing treatment for colon tumour.

“He is in the hospital regulating medication,” Pele’s daughter Kely Nascimento wrote on Instagram.

“There is (no) emergency or new dire prediction… We appreciate the concern and love.”

Since receiving a colon cancer diagnosis last year, Pele has routinely undergone chemotherapy treatments.

In September 2021, he underwent surgery to remove the tumor, which involved a month in the hospital.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, more popularly known as Pele, is regarded by many as the best football player to ever play the game.

Pele has one of the most legendary careers in sports. He is also the only player in history to have won three World Cups (1958, 1962, and 1970). Before retiring in 1977, he scored more than 1,000 goals.

His public appearances have grown increasingly rare, but he maintains an active presence on social media. Recently, telling the Brazilian national team he was counting on them to “bring this trophy home” from the World Cup.

Brazil is in Group G alongside Switzerland, Cameroon and Serbia, and they have qualified for the knockout stages. Their final group stage match is against Cameroon on Friday at 8pm (GMT+1).
