Football Weekend Review: UEFA Nations League

Cristiano Biraghi’s stoppage-time goal earned Italy a 1-0 Nations League win at Poland.

Lorenzo Insigne’s corner was flicked on by Kevin Lasagna and Biraghi turned the ball in at the back post as the visitors won in Chorzow to relegate Poland from League A Group 3.

The Azzurri had earlier twice hit the bar, through Jorginho and Insigne, while Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny also saved from Jorginho and Giorgio Chiellini.

But Roberto Mancini’s men were able to celebrate a victory.

Russia remains unbeaten at the top of League B Group 2 following a 2-0 win over Turkey in Sochi. Roman Neustadter and Denis Cheryshev were on target for Russia, who were held goalless by Sweden last Thursday.

The 2018 World Cup hosts need only a draw with Sweden in Solna next month to be promoted, while Turkey will be relegated if they lose to Sweden.

Romania and Serbia drew 0-0 in Bucharest. Dusan Tadic missed a penalty in first-half stoppage time after Gabriel Tamas was sent off for a foul.

Stefan Mugosa scored twice as Montenegro beat Lithuania 4-1 in Vilnius. Boris Kopitovic and Darko Zoric were also on the scoresheet for the visitors, with Rolandas Baravykas scoring a consolation for the hosts.

Tomer Hemed and Dia Seba were on target as Israel beat Albania 2-0 in League C Group 1.

It was a second successive win for Israel, who beat Scotland last Thursday and sees them top the group with six points.

Azerbaijan drew 1-1 with Malta and Faroe Islands and Kosovo drew with the same scoreline, also in League D, Group 3.

Unbeaten Kosovo remains top of the group.
