President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said he was committed to the fulfillment of his electoral promises to Nigerians. He however admitted that the task is not an easy one.

Air force resumes bombing of vandals in Lagos, Ogun communities

The Nigerian Air Force has resumed the aerial bombardment of hideouts of the vandals in the Ogun State axis of Arepo, launching fresh air strikes on Friday.

It was gathered that the NAF resumed the current attack after gunshots were heard firing from deep inside the mangrove forest following the visit of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and other top security personalities to the area on Thursday. A top security source said that the NAF deployed an Augusta helicopter for the operation which struck some locations of the vandals. Read more

FG To Pay Workers N293bn Benefit Claims  

Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita has said that Government is exploring phased payments of Federal Civil Servants’ benefits, incurred through service wide staff claims, particularly those bothering on promotion arears, first 28 days, repatriation allowance and death benefits, among others, which amounts to about N293bn. Read more

Unexpected dismissal pushed me to crime – Suspect

An armed robbery suspect has confessed that he took to a life of crime following an unexpected dismissal from the job he laboured to get.

When in April 2016, said a source, a group of suspects robbed some expatriates and the case was reported at Lagos Command Special Anti-robbery Squad codenamed Federal SARS and all efforts to apprehend them failed, the case was transferred to the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IGP IRT).  Briefed that the gang specialised in robbing Chinese expatriates, the intelligence team moved in and recovered a stolen telephone handset. Ban hails EU donation to African-led Lake Chad Basin task force combating Boko Haram

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has commended the European Union (EU) Commission for its 50 million euro contribution to the multinational task force, created by Lake Chad Basin countries – Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria – and Benin to combat Boko Haram insurgents in the sub-region.

According to a statement issued late yesterday by the his Spokesperson’s Office, the Secretary-General welcomed the signing of an agreement between EU and the African Union Commission, in Brussels, Belgium, on 1 August, on the EU’s contribution to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF). Dogara meets Buhari, says he won’t resign

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday met behind closed doors with the embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara.

Dogara is currently in the eye of the storm following allegations by a former Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, that he (Dogara); the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yussuff Lasun; the Chief Whip, Mr. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa; and the Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, padded the 2016 Budget. FG recalls mines officers over diversion of explosives

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has recalled all federal mines officers in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal capital territory.

This comes a day after the Office of the National Security Adviser arrested five security operatives and two others for the diversion of explosives to militants and the ministry withdrew the licence of Koko, an explosives company in Delta. Read more

Kaduna to spend N2.2bn on salaries of new staff

The Kaduna State Government said on Friday that N2.2 billion would be paid to 1,200 newly recruited staff of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

FX Regime: Three million maritime workers may lose jobs

Maritime activities closed on Friday with the President, Shippers Association Lagos State, Mr Jonathan Nicol, saying that the floating exchange rate might shed three million staff strength in the maritime sector. Nicol said that the new forex regime had distorted import projections which had now been on decline.

According to him, the recent increase in exchange rate of N313 to the dollar is not only unprofessional but conveys the ignorance of port administrators including the Central Bank of Nigeria. He noted that with the new forex regime, shippers are paying more duty and costs of consumer goods were going up. Read more

MTN records first interim loss

Africa’s biggest mobile phone operator MTN Group Ltd cut investor payouts by almost 50 per cent as it reported its first-ever half-yearly loss on Friday. MTN said in Johannesburg that the drop was due to a hit from a hefty regulatory fine in Nigeria.

MTN agreed in June to pay N330 billion ($1.05 billion) fine in a settlement with Nigeria for missing a deadline to cut off unregistered SIM cards from its network. Read more

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) on Friday restated its commitment to support the country’s economy by helping businesses to grow. Mr Ahmed Kuru, Managing Director, AMCON made the assertion at a media parley in Lagos.

Niger state has produced its second female chief judge in Justice Maria Sanda Zukogi whose appointment by Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has been ratified by the state house of assembly.

Buhari Eulogies late Journalist, Ehirim, at Burial

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday eulogized the virtues of the former chairman of the Nigeria Union Journalists, Abuja Council, late Chuks Ehirim, as he was laid to rest.

Nigeria’s naira hits post-peg black market low of 400

Nigeria’s naira hit 400 against the dollar on the black market on Friday, bureaux de change traders said, falling to its lowest since the central bank floated the currency in June.

On the official interbank market, the naira ended at 311 per dollar, 0.3 percent weaker, after trades worth $12.63 million. Read more

Seizure Of Fayose’s Assets In Order – Court Rules

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja has ruled that the temporary order of attachment granted in relation to some identified assets of the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, is not in violation of Section 308 of the constitution. The judge said the intention of the immunity clause granted to some public office holders is not to shield them from investigation by security agencies for the purpose of obtaining evidence for future uses.

His words: “It is my considered opinion that the order of court, made on July 20, 2016 in respect of some property of the applicant, and within the limited scope and duration within which it was obtained, was duly procured and does not offend the provision of the Constitution referred to,” Dimgba said. Court rejects Yuguda’s request to travel for treatment

An Abuja High Court on Friday dismissed an application by a former minister, Amb. Bashir Yuguda, seeking leave to travel abroad for medical checkup.

Yuguda, a former Minister of State for Finance, is standing trial for alleged diversion of N3.3 billion alongside retired Col. Sambo Dasuki, the former National Security Adviser. Read more

FG Orders Sealing Of Company For Illegal Diversion Of Explosives

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Kayode fayemi has ordered the immediate sealing off of Nigerian Development and Construction Company; an importer and exporter of explosives in Koko, Delta State, over illegal diversion of explosives.

Biology teacher arrested for having sex with students

A 24-year-old teacher, Marquita Alston, in Tennessee has been arrested for allegedly seducing and having sex with five of her students.

Alston was said to have had sexual contact with five boys while a teacher at Pearl Cohn High School in Nashville. The teacher, according to Metro UK,  allegedly had the act with the students between September and November 2014. Read more

Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte, has given a commitment that the 81 million dollars stolen by cyber criminals from the account of Bangladesh Bank in New York and funnelled through bank accounts in Manila would be returned.
