President Muhammadu Buhari has described Chief Bisi Akande, the first interim National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as a distinguished, decent and truthful figure with high integrity he could go into the jungle with.
Buhari spoke at the Public Presentation of Chef Bisi Akande’s autobiography titled “My Participation” on Thursday, December 9, in Lagos.
1st News reports several dignitaries including Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, APC National Leader, Sen. Bola Tinubu, governors, federal and state lawmakers, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, among others, graced the event.
In his address, Buhari said that Akande remained a ‘‘perfect public officer,” who had retained his ‘‘inflexible integrity,” in and out of public office, never accepting or offering bribes.
The president, who heaped praises on the former governor of Osun, further described him as a friendly person; as well as an administrator of the first order, whose leadership qualities made him the unanimous choice as the first chairman of the APC.
Buhari used the occasion to recount his first meeting with Akande, his passion for Nigeria, achievements, and disappointment as governor of Osun, as well as his many battles to wrest power from the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
”My first personal contact with Chief Akande was, if I recall correctly; in 2006 when preliminary consultations were coming to fruition for a grand coalition to unseat the PDP government.
”Those efforts eventually came to nothing.
”Neither he, nor I, nor many of our friends and associates gave up; as, in Chief Akande’s words: “the country was going down and down under PDP” (pg 396 of My Participations), ” he said.
Responding, Akande, who declared his love for the President, prayed God to grant him successful tenure in office.
“We love you because you love Nigeria. We want Nigeria to be united, we want Nigeria to be peaceful, we want Nigeria to be prosperous. You and I want Nigeria.
“Nigeria is not yours alone; because you are our leaders, we accuse you for every move that is wrong. Even though when we know that we are not being fair to ourselves.
“We know we are fraudulent, we know we are deceitful, we know we are cheaters. Of all the things we are doing wrong, we blame on you, I didn’t sympathise with you, you applied for the job.
“May your tenure be prosperous, may Nigeria be greater in your time, May Nigeria be united may Nigeria be peaceful,”
