Imo Police Command refutes reports of fire at assembly complex

The Imo Police Command has confirmed Sunday’s robbery attack on motorists in the Orji area of Owerri, which left four persons with bullet injuries.

The command’s Spokesperson, SP Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the incident in Owerri on Sunday, April 25. Orlando said the victims of the attack had been taken to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri for treatment. 1st News reports that the incident took place near the Orji Divisional Police Headquarters on Owerri-Okigwe Road around 10.30 pm.

It was learnt that the hoodlums, who were trailing an unmarked security vehicle; double-crossed it at Orji and opened fire on the driver.

Eyewitness account said the gunmen also robbed other motorists and commuters in commercial vehicles at the same spot.

The account further said the robbers shot sporadically after the operation to scare away people; before making their escape.

“It was during the sporadic shooting that three more persons around the area were hit by bullet,” the eyewitness said on the condition of anonymity.

The incident caused tension and panic in the area; forcing residents and passersby to run helter-skelter for their lives.

The robbery, which came barely one day after the attack on Imo Gov. Hope Uzodinma’s country home in Omuma, had further heightened the fear of insecurity in the state.

In another development, the police spokesman has debunked the report of an alleged attack on the Imo House of Assembly.

In a statement, he described the online video; showing the assembly complex under fire, as false.

According to him, the building, which was on fire in social media; was neither the state house of assembly nor any building in Imo.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has dismissed one Insp. Jonathan Kampani, attached to Mounted Troop of the Nigeria Police Force; for allegedly firing at, and killing one Jelili Bakare, at Quinox Lounge.

A statement by CSP Olumuyuwa Adejobi, Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, on Sunday, April 25, in Lagos, said Kampani, with force No. 278055; committed the offence on March 18, at Sangotedo Area of Lagos.

Adejobi said the command had conveyed the dismissal of the erring Inspector to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State CID, Panti, Yaba for prosecution, as advised by Lagos State Department of Public Prosecution.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, ordered for the arrest; and immediate orderly room trial of the inspector after the incident.

“He also led a team of senior officers in the command to pay a condolence visit to the family of the deceased at Chief Bakare’s House, Ajiranland, Eti-Osa Local Government of Lagos State, on Saturday, March 27,” Adejobi said.
