The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has said it will not release the 2023 general election timetable until the Electoral Act Amendment Bill is signed into law.
This was disclosed by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu on Tuesday, January 18; in Abuja during the commission’s first quarterly consultative meeting with political parties.
He said; “On the Electoral Amendment Bill currently before the National Assembly; the INEC is encouraged by the Senate President’s assurance to give priority attention to the Bill; when the National Assembly reconvenes from its recess today; and the commitment by the President to assent to the Bill as soon as the issue of mode of primaries by political parties is resolved. We look forward to a speedy passage of the Bill, which is crucial to our preparations for future elections.
“As soon as it is signed into law, the Commission will quickly release the Timetable and Schedule of Activities; for the 2023 General Election based on the new law”.
Meanwhile, the apex Igbo socio-political group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo on Monday, January 17; sought the support of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum for an Igbo Presidency in 2023.
This was disclosed when the Secretary-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro met with the AYCF Chairman, Yerima Shettima in Kaduna.
Isiguzoro said, “I thank my brother…Comrade Yerima Shettima for the wonderful reception..since we arrived…In fact, I’m very much amazed, the Kaduna we used to read in the dailies or watch on TV is different from the Kaduna I’m seeing.
“Everywhere is very serene and very peaceful. I commend my brother and the state government who have made it possible to have a wonderful environment.
“This is Igbo delegation for 2023 Presidency led by the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. In fact..we launched this committee about a week ago and we decided that the best thing we should do is to interface with the North.
“This is because we know that the North with their population..vast majority, the North would always play the role of kingmaker, being the deciding factor in 2023 Presidency.
“The best thing we should do is to migrate to the other side of the world; come to this place and interface with the real people who are holding the masses.”
