On Thursday, November 28, 23-year-old YBNL superstar, Firebooy DML released his debut studio album ‘Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps’. 


Fireboy is signed to Olamide’s record label, Yahoo Boy No Laptop, YBNL. He joined the label in 2018 alongside Lyta, Limerick, Davo Lee, Yomi Blaze and Picasso. Olamide dubbed the group, YBNL Mafians and went ahead to release an eponymous music project with the squad.


Fast forward to twelve months later, Fireboy is the last man standing alongside the YBNL boss. Somehow, Olamide recognized something fascinating about the poet, lyricist and scintillating singer. Olamide dispatched the aforementioned protegees and went selected DML to be the face of his label.


Olamide repackaged his frontman and empowered him as the future of Afrobeat.


Prior to the release of his voraciously anticipated debut album, Fireboy dropped three massive singles. They include, ‘Jealous’, ‘What if I say’ and ‘King‘.


Further, Fireboy received an award for Next Rated at the 2019 Headies Award. Unfortunately, Don Jazzy’s protegee, Rema came out on top.

Despite his loss, Fireboy picked himself up and announced his debut studio album on social media. His announcement enthralled his audience and at last, everyone will listen to what the youngster has to say.


Several weeks after the announcement, Fireboy released his debut album, Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps on Thursday, November 28.


Understanding Fireboy’s Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps


Fireboy real name Adedamola Adefolahan had a life prior to his emergence in the music industry. According to reports, he is a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU where he studied Accounting. Although he has always had a passion for music, Fireboy originally wanted to become a poet.


During his time in higher institution, DML was a reportedly a member of a poetry club where he actively participated. This explains his immaculate use of metaphor and idioms in some of his songs.


Fireboy’s poetic background makes his album more soothing and warm to the eardrums of his listeners. His lyrics can generate a reaction from his audience, this is rare with the average Nigerian singer.


While Afrobeat and its derivates are predominantly about drugs, sex and party, Fireboy’s give you a profound reason to want to fall in love and reignite the spark of romance with your partner.


His songwriting methodology is simple, however, his delivery is topnotch and suave. This generation requires hope, faith and love and this young man is dishing it impeccably with ease.


The album itself is a narrative on how he came from having nothing into enjoying the epicureanism of life. The singles, ‘wait and see’ and ‘High on life’ describes his excitement in becoming one of the biggest second wave acts of Afrobeat. Now, he has the opportunity to see everything he dreamt about and achieve all his heart desires.

Although the 13-track album is predominantly themed around love and romance, Fireboy reminds his audience that it is essential to party on the single ‘scatter’. Adopting a Joker-persona on ‘Scatter’; the singer did not lose sight of the importance of gyration.


It is good to love, but nothing can take the place of party and groove from Nigerians. According to reports, Nigerians are happiest people on earth and they love to have fun. Hence, DML had to release ‘scatter’ and ‘King’ as songs for club rotation.
