Wednesday 16th of October is celebrated as World Food Day. It’s a yearly event around the world with a new theme and slogan for each year.
The theme for the 2019 celebration revolved around the need for a healthy diet and its implication for sustained good health and continued well being.
According to the report released by the Food and Agricultural Organization ( FAO), about one in every three persons around the world is affected by obesity or other forms of malnutrition. They believe if there are no significant interventions, the situation is obviously going to worsen to about one in every two by 2025.
Currently over 670 million adults and more than 40 million children are suffering from obesity. The disparity around the world is even more highlighted by the fact that, in the midst of this epidemic of obesity, over 820 million people suffer from hunger.
Long ago, one of the fathers of medicine said: “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.”
This famous quote is often attributed to Hippocrates. Hippocrates considered nutrition one of the main tools that a doctor can use. More than that, dietary measures play a lead part in ensuring and enhancing good health.
Several diseases are associated with food and diet . They include obesity. Obesity often results from an imbalance between declining energy expenditure due to physical inactivity and high energy in the diet.
Excess weight gain, overweight and obesity and physical inactivity account for the escalating rates of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes leads to increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and infections.
Cardiovascular diseases are major contributors to death from non-communicable diseases. Inappropriate diet and physical inactivity or sedentary lifestyle are significant factors.
Avoid salt-laden food, consume more veggies
Risk of heart and cardiovascular diseases are reduced by eating meals ladened with less saturated fatty acids as well as increased intake of fruits and vegetables.
Nigerians are a salt loving people and most of our local delicacies are heavily salt-laden. Reduction of salt intake helps reduce blood pressure. Indeed, blood pressure is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases.
Concerning different kinds of cancer, limiting alcohol intake will reduce risk for liver cancer. Also, ensuring an adequate intake of fruit and vegetables should further reduce risk for stomach and colorectal cancer. At a time, Nigeria had one of the lowest rates of colon cancer in the world.
The major reason adduced was our high intake of vegetables of different kinds in our local soups. Each tribe and people had unique soups that were peculiar and commonly and regularly eaten by them.
Osteoporosis and bone fractures are a problem in older and senior citizens. Adequate intake of high calcium and Vitamin D containing-diets reduces the risk considerable.
So you see, the popular expression – ‘I can not come and kill myself’ only makes sense if you watch what you eat and also lead an active life.
