One Bashir Magaji, a man who had all but confirmed his marriage to his fiancée; Sadiya Muhammed, received a rude shock when she called off the engagement. Thereafter, the man had, on Monday January 27, 2020, dragged his former fiancée Sadiya and her father Umar; before an upper Sharia court sitting at Tudun Wada, Kaduna for refusing his marriage proposal.
The plaintiff, who resides in Tudun Wada, Kaduna; told the court that he sought Muhammad’s hand in marriage when she was still in secondary school. He told the court that her father had asked him to wait until she finished school.
‘‘I paid N20,000 for introduction and continued to take care of the girl’s needs,’’ the man told the court. ‘‘I paid for her WAEC two times, paid for her Qur’anic graduation; bought her cell phones and gave her sister some money to start up a business.
‘‘Trouble started when I refused to sponsor my former fiancée’s birthday party; a decision that angered her father, and he called off the engagement,” he said.
Subsequently, he prayed the court to recover all he that he spent on Sadiya in the four- year courtship.
The defence counsel, Mr Muhammad Alhassan, told the court his clients had fully refunded the defendant the N20,000 introduction money.
Two of the plaintiff witnesses testified to the fact that the girl’s father did return the N20,000. Also, they claimed he consequently called off the engagement after a misunderstanding about his daughter’s birthday party.
However, they said they were not in a position to either confirm or deny other payments; or refund of same to the plaintiff.
The Judge, Malam Lawal Sule-Abdulllahi, adjourned the case until February 1, 2020 for more witnesses to testify.
