A 25-year-old man identified as Nathaniel Oladiran, has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly beating a middle-aged woman to death.
The incident occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State.
1st News reports that the suspect was also accused of attempted murder. This came after he also allegedly used a cutlass to cut a five-year-old boy’s mouth. The man was remanded in custody by an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ court in Ibadan on Tuesday. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Olaide Amzat, ruled that the suspect be detained at the Abolongo Correctional Facility in Oyo Town.
Equally important, Mr. Amzat did not take the defendant’s plea, citing lack of jurisdiction.
Consequently, he ordered that the defendant be remanded; pending the outcome of the case file at the Oyo State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice. Subsequently, he adjourned the case till Thursday, August 5, 2021 for mention.
The defendant is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder and attempted murder.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Inspector Opeyemi Olagunju, disclosed that Oladiran and others at large allegedly conspired to commit the offence.
“On May 26, at about 7pm, Oladiran allegedly caused the death of one Adijat Asifa; 50 and one Wale (surname unknown) by beating both to death unlawfully. The defendant was also alleged to have unlawfully attempted to kill one five-year-old Israel Saidi by cutting both sides of his mouth with a cutlass,’’ Olagunju said.
In addition, the prosecutor stated that the offence was committed at Antorin Village, via Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
He noted that the offence contravened Section 316 and punishable under sections 319 and 320 of the Criminal Code of Oyo State 2000.
A Singaporean woman has been jailed for 30 years on Tuesday for her part in the torture and death of a domestic helper from Myanmar in 2016.
The woman, 41, was identified as Gaiyathiri Murugayan.
She had pleaded guilty in February to 28 charges, including culpable homocide, related to the death of Piang Ngai Don; who was starved and weighed 24 kilogrammes when she died.
