How Naira Marley became a star with ‘Soapy’
‘Puta‘ would serve as Marley’s fourth single since his release from EFCC. He released ‘Am I a yahoo boy?’ and ‘Opotoyi’ then the massively successful ‘soapy‘.
The controversial single, ‘soapy‘ has been intensely criticized due to its suggestive dance gesture and sexual content.
The conservative Nigerian audience requested the song to be banned with immediate effect.
Despite the provocative lyrics in the audio version, the video which was later released in August was family-friendly. The music video concentrated primarily on life in the prison, it was void of the expected controversial content.
Naira Marley: Hard to ignore
Equally important, Marley’s ‘soapy’ is popular among both his young and old listeners across the world. He has ironically gained mainstream popularity due to his ludicrous, lewd and rebellious output.
Most Nigerians claim to hate Naira Marley due to his irreverent persona. However, it is impossible to ignore him. At every party, rave, ceremony and religious gatherings, a version of Naira Marley’s music always hits the speakers.

Naira Marley has established a methodology to differ from his counterparts.
First, his affiliation with producer Rexxie is reminiscent of Don Jazzy and D’banj‘s formation in the early 2000s. Although Rexxie is not a popular figure in the industry, his contribution and a dexterous masterpiece are playing a massive role in Marley’s music career.
Rexxie has fabricated some of the most sensational beats and his engineering skills have left listeners mesmerized, hence they hunger for more music. Equally important, Rexxie is the pioneer of the Zanku beat and his creativity helped explode it into the mainstream.
Indeed, every Naira Marley hit is courtesy of Rexxie’s enthralling composition.
Below are videos of social media users trying to do a rendition of soapy.
The popular Caucasian man, Uwe Walter who gained notoriety after doing a cover of Burna Boy‘s ‘Ye‘ and Davido‘s ‘blow my mind‘ recently released a version of the hit single.
