Ndidi: Super Eagles midfielder bemoans harassment by SARS officials, supports calls for disbandment

Super Eagles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, on Saturday, October 10, lamented the frequent high-handedness of officials of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad towards footballers who are overseas, which is why they are scared to visit the country.

Ndidi made this known in a tweet on Saturday.

Ndidi, who plays for Premier League club Leicester City, lamented that many Nigerian youths are being killed by those expected to protect them.

The footballer also decried the arrest of youths putting on hairstyles also worn by footballers.

“#EndSARS for the safety of Nigerians… we are scared to visit home because the people who are meant to protect us are killing us. Looking good with dreads is not a crime,” he tweeted.

Furthermore, other Super Eagles players, including Leon Balogun; Shehu Abdulahi; as well as John Ogu had joined the protest against extortion and brutality by the SARS.

1st News had reported that thousands of youth across the country have taken to streets in a solidarity protest to call for the scrapping of FSARS.

Balogun tweeted, “The reasons for the #EndSARSProtests have just come to my attention via very disturbing images and tweets. It is never good when those charged with protecting the citizens are now terrorising; extorting; or even killing the same citizens. I support #EndSarsProtests #EndSars.”

Ogu, who has been without a club since the COVID-19 pandemic, also wrote, “I pray our first checkpoint will never be our last bus-stop. Enough is enough.”

“The voice of the people must be heard, @NigeriaGov must #EndSARS and protect the lives of our Youth from #PoliceBrutality. My brother @BashirAhmaad, kindly pass our message to the President @MBuhari,” Abdulahi added.
