Nigerians have begun to sell the 13-page statement addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari by a former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, in traffic in major cities around the country. Premium times reporter observed on Wednesday that in Lagos, copies of the ‘special statement’ printed and bound were being displayed and sold in traffic around major parts of the city. President Muhammadu Buhari should heed the admonition of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, drop his re-election bid, and allow a new leader with ‘fresh and progressive ideas’ to take charge, the senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has said. Boycott beef, groups tell southern, Middle Belt indigenes (Punch)

Two groups, the Southern Nigeria Forum, and the Association of Middle Belt Ethnic Nationalities, have called on the indigenes of the southern and Middle Belt regions of the country to abstain from eating beef for 21 days in honour of the victims of attacks by herdsmen. The proposed 21-day beef boycott is to commence on March 1, 2018. The groups made the call in a communiqué they issued after a meeting in Enugu. Kidnapping: Army launches operation `Karamin Goro’ in Kaduna, Niger (Vanguard)

The 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Kaduna has launched a special operation in parts of Kaduna and Niger States to tackle rising cases of kidnapping, armed robbery and cattle rustling. The operation, code named `Karamin Goro’, will cover Minna-Birnin Gwari-Pandogari and Minna-Sarkin Pawa general area, a statement by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Muhammad Dole said on Thursday. Dole said in Kaduna that the special operation involved the Nigeria Air Force, Police, DSS operatives and Nigeria Civil Defence Corps. Read more

The Federal Government yesterday said it has released $1 million for the delivery of contraceptives for the enhancement of quality family planning among Nigerians. Militants vow resumption of attacks on oil facilities (SUN)

A coalition of Niger Delta agitators has threatened to resume destruction of oil installations and other Federal Government facilities in the region. The group has also given a month deadline to Fulani herdsmen to vacate Niger Delta region following their nefarious activities across the country. The militants took the resolutions, on Wednesday, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, after three weeks of consultations and meetings across the Niger Delta region. Also, the Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators (CNDA), the umbrella militant group in the region, has also issued a 90-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to implement restructuring and resource control. Milan train crash kills 3 and injures dozens (CNN)

At least three people were killed and dozens more were injured Thursday when a train near the Italian city of Milan derailed and crashed, the Italian fire department said. The train derailed at 7 a.m. (1 a.m. ET) in Pioltello, on the northeastern outskirts of Milan, as it was traveling to Porta Garibaldi railway station in the center of the city. At least eight people remain in critical condition after the crash. Rescuers help a woman out of the derailed train in Pioltello on Thursday. The train’s operator, Trenord, said in a tweet that a “technical problem” caused the incident. Read more

2 days after his arrest Egypt presidential hopeful Anan is missing (Memo)

Presidential hopeful Sami Anan’s family have said that they do not know where he is being detained or what decision the military prosecution reached after interrogating him on Tuesday. Samir, Anan’s son, said that a lawyer from Dina Adly Hussein’s office attended the interrogations on Tuesday night which lasted more than six hours. When the lawyer asked where Anan was being detained one of the interrogators said he was on his way home, but the family confirmed that he was not there. Samir said security forces searched the house and confiscated all the files they found, according to the Egyptian website Mada Masr. Read more

Police in Rome said on Thursday they had arrested 31 people on suspicion of mafia activity in Ostia, a seaside suburb that has been one of the hotspots in a major anti-mafia investigation in the Italian capital. Thirty-one members and affiliates of a suspected clan allegedly run by the Spada family were picked up in raids starting at dawn in the Ostia coastal neighbourhood, a police official said, while one suspect remained at large. Ostia was the only one of Rome’s 15 districts to be put under direct government control because of alleged mafia infiltration after a wide-ranging investigation dubbed “Mafia Capital” led to dozens of arrests in 2014. North Korea calls for unification of Korean Peninsula (Foxnews)

North Korea on Thursday called for “all Koreans at home and abroad” to take steps toward unification without the help of any other countries. The message urged all Koreans to “promote contact, travel, cooperation between North and South Korea,” while assuring that Pyongyang would get over any hurdles in its way toward reunifying the peninsula, Reuters reported, citing North Korean state media. North Korea also said military exercises with “outside forces” hindered the development of relations between North and South Korea.
