Nigerians kick as Presidential spokesman describes renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana as ‘unsuccessful’

Nigerians have reacted to a statement credited to Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu in which he described renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana as ‘unsuccessful’. Indeed, angry Nigerians have taken to the micro-blogging platform Twitter to call out the Presidency for the perceived disrespectful comment.

1st News had reported that the issue arose when the Presidency came out to douse allegations of a third term agenda. Equally important, the statements had been credited to Falana.

“I hope Nigerians have not forgotten that when the Babangida-led junta was going to extend its tenure,’’ Falana had said. ‘‘We had the Association for Better Nigeria (ABN) that went to court that the 1993 presidential election should not hold.

“We thought it was a joke. So, very soon, Nigerians will have other manifestation over the third term agenda.”

Subsequently, Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the President; Shehu had doused the claims in a swift rebuttal on Monday. In his riposte, Shehu had described Falana as an ‘unsuccessful opposition candidate’.

‘‘The popularly acclaimed human rights lawyer and formerly unsuccessful opposition candidate for governor of Ekiti state, Femi Falana, has boarded the free-publicity train, full of those seeking personal media attention in claiming the president is planning a third term in office.’’

Angry Nigerians tackle Presidential spokesman for disrespecting Falana

However, the comments have not gone down well with a section of Nigerians on social media. Subsequently, a livid section of the citizenry has taken to Twitter to bash Shehu and the Presidency.

Indeed, the majority are of the view that the comments attributed to the President’s spokesman are highly disrespectful to Falana. Further, the overriding opinion is that the renowned lawyer; is within his rights to question the sincerity of the Buhari administration over the rumoured third term agenda.

Meanwhile, 1st News has put together some of the views shared by Nigerians on the matter.

Nevertheless, a few Nigerians have also sided with the Presidency. Indeed, a smaller minority of Twitter users have also accused Falana of once campaigning for Buhari.
