Obasanjo urges Buhari to meet with Nnamdi Kanu to calm agitations

A former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to consider a meeting with leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu as a way to resolve the crisis in the South East.

Obasanjo made the call in a chat with Newsweek.

1st News reports that the recent re-arrest and ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu on terrorism charges has coincided with a rise in insecurity and a series of orchestrated attacks on security operatives and civilian targets in the South East. Also, members of IPOB have recently embarked on a declaration of sit-at-home orders which are threatening the conduct of the November 6 gubernatorial election in Anambra State.

While speaking with Newsweek, Obasanjo urged the president to meet with Nnamdi Kanu before the current crisis gets out of hand; even as he stated that it would be a move in the right direction.

“I don’t see anything wrong in that [Buhari meeting with Kanu]. I would not object to that; if anything, I would encourage it.”

“I would want to meet Kanu myself and talk to people like him, people of his age, [and ask:] ‘What are your worries?’ Not only from the southeast but from all parts of Nigeria. We need to satisfy the youth in job creation, in wealth creation, in giving them a better, fulfilled life, in giving them hope for the future. There’s no easy way out,” Obasanjo said.

Meanwhile, a  member of the Biafra National Guard (BNG), one General Innocent Orji, has openly declared the unit’s determination to defend the sovereignty of the Biafran nation, even as he restated their readiness to take on the Nigerian Army.

The BNG member made this known while unveiling a coloured rocket-propelled grenade which he described as ‘red devil rockets’.

1st News reports that a video of the development is currently making the rounds on social media. Specifically, the self-declared General Orji stated that Biafra is real, adding that the BNG has rehoisted the flag. Further, he disclosed their readiness to defend the Biafra nation with the last drop of their blood.

What I want the people of Biafra to know is that Biafra is real. We have redeclared the sovereignty of the Biafran nation, and we have rehoist our Biafran flag.

“What I want the people of Biafra to know is that I and my men we will defend Biafra nation with the last drop of our blood, no matter whatever it is.

“Now very soon now, we will begin to defend our nation from the boundaries. I’m telling you all these things: no two ways about that. Very soon, BNG (Biafra National Guard) will clear all the doubts on the people.

‘‘We are not afraid of the soldiers. But we just want to know what the people are saying. But we don’t care about whatever they say. All we care is we must do the needful, whether they support or not. But their support will help us to save more lives.

“This is not about the 1967 of a thing (Nigerian Civil War). We have our strategy.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army is yet to react to the development.
