Obi Cubana: Nigerians react to arrest of popular socialite by EFCC

A deluge of reactions has trailed the arrest of popular socialite and nightlife impresario, Obi Cubana.

 

1st News reports that Obi Cubana, real name, Obi Iyiegbu was allegedly arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, November 1, 2021.

 

Reports indicate that the popular night club owner who arrived the headquarters of the EFCC at Jabi, Abuja; at about noon on Monday, is currently being interrogated by operatives of the commission. Specifically, a source in the commission claimed his case borders on alleged money laundering and tax fraud.

 

“Obi Cubana was arrested and brought to the EFCC headquarters on Monday afternoon over allegations of money laundering and tax fraud. He is being grilled by detectives as we speak,’’ a source at the commission told The Punch.

 

Meanwhile, 1st News reports that his investigation for alleged money laundering and tax fraud is believed to have been spurred by recent events that had thrown the businessman into the public spotlight.

In July, Obi Cubana catapulted himself into national consciousness; instantly becoming an overnight celebrity after a lavish burial ceremony that trended for weeks after its conclusion. As a matter of fact, the nightclub owner had shut down Oba, Anambra State for the burial of his deceased mother; with the well-attended event attracting the crème of Nigeria’s elite, including politicians, socialites and other celebrities. In addition, over  200 cows were reportedly slaughtered at the event; with attendees also taking the money-spraying concept to new levels during the extravagant funeral. Bundles of local and foreign currency rained down as the Obi Cubana set a new standard in the art of merry-making.

 

However, the arrest of the popular celebrity has triggered a storm of reactions from Nigerians on social media.

 

Indeed, for many, the EFCC was accused of picking on the wrong target in Obi Cubana; with a cross-section of social media users defending the businessman and urging the commission to go after corrupt politicians.
