In order to avert a further breakdown in law and order, leaders of the #EndSARS protesters in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Monday, October 12, agreed a ceasefire provided some conditions were met.
Amongst these conditions are:
- The police authorities must release arrested protesters.
- Prosecution of the police officers who killed Jimoh Isiaka at the weekend.
1st News gathered that the enraged youths gave these conditions during a meeting facilitated by a community leader and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo, Akinwale Akinwole.
This is as part of efforts by the government to ensure peace return to Ogbomoso.
Normalcy returned to the community after the meeting.
One of the leaders, who gave his name as Taju, said: “Those who are killed by the police are innocent people.
“The victims were not part of the agitation to #EndSARS slogan that rented the air. The police came to our areas to arrest our innocent brothers and even relatives of the deceased.
“We will desist from violent and allow peace and normalcy to return to the town, but the police must release all those that have been arrested and the police must also present the officers that shot at people during the protest.”
Akinwole, popularly called Wolekanle, while addressing the youths at the meeting, commended them for embarking on the protest that led to the disbandment of the SARS unit.
He however frowned at how the palace of Soun of Ogbomosho, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi was attacked and vandalised on Sunday.
He said: “The #EndSARS protest was a right step taken at a right time and thank God SARS has been disbanded by the IGP but the way the palace of Soun of Ogbomoso was destroyed on Sunday was uncalled for.
“Talk has already been initiated in town; and I can assure you that everything will be settled; but you have to be calm. Governor Seyi Makinde is not happy with the development and is already wading in to see how lasting peace would be achieved.”
Soun slams reports of killings, police brutality
Meanwhile, the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, on Monday dismissed reports of the killing of #EndSARS protesters in his palace.
1st News had reported that some youths were murdered by the police after protests; due to the earlier death of Jimoh.
The palace was attacked on Sunday as #ENDSARS protests continued in the area.
The monarch was holding a meeting with the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare when the youths stormed the palace.
But in a statement issued by his Principal Secretary Mr. Toyin Ajamu, the Ogbomoso monarch insisted that the palace was attacked by hoodlums who damaged properties.
He added that a chief was injured during the attack.
Oba Oyewumi urged the appropriate authorities to investigate the incident in a bid to bring the perpetrators of the attack to book and avert a recurrence.
The statement reads: “The attack was perpetrated by hoodlums and miscreants; disguised as protesters against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS); leading to the wanton destruction of properties and vehicles at the palace. A chief among other palace officials also sustained injuries.
“Contrary to fake news being disseminated on social media; we state categorically that despite the needless provocations and ill-treatment meted out to the Royal household; during the violent attack on the palace; the Paramount ruler; and his household did not retaliate.
“Kabiyesi, who was with his chiefs and subjects including Minister of Youth and Sports Development (an indigene of Ogbomoso), when the hoodlums invaded the palace; advised the palace staff to refrain from attacking the hoodlums.
“Hence, none of the miscreants and thugs was attacked by the palace household; but rather a chief, who was pelted with stones by the hoodlums sustained serious injuries.
“The dead bodies being circulated on social media were brought into the palace by the hoodlums; to cause confusion and justify the attack on the palace.”
