Oprah Winfrey has lost her mother, Vernita Lee, aged 83 years old in death.
Vernita Lee died on Thanksgiving day according to reports
Soon after the news became public, the family put out a statement saying:
‘The family of Vernita Lee is saddened to share of her passing on November 22, 2018 at her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was 83 years old, Born May 2, 1935, She is survived by her daughters Oprah Winfrey and Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, grandchildren Alisha Hayes, Chrishaunda Lee Perez, Aquarius Lofton, and Andre Brown and great-grandchildren Jaxon Praise Perez, Chai Theresa Perez, Donovan Hayes, and Trinity Hayes, she was Predeceased by son Jeffrey Lee (1960-1989)) and daughter Patricia Lee Lloyd (1959-2003). Private funeral services have been held. Memorial donations in Vernita’s name may be made to Feeding America.’
Oprah’s niece, Alisha Hayes, was the first to announce the death on Facebook and confirmed by representatives for the star.
Alisha wrote, ‘My grandmother, Rest In Peace,’ sharing pictures of the two together.
‘I lost my beautiful grandma on Thanksgiving. She was the number one supporter of Pat’s [Alisha’s restaurant] and was the person who named our restaurant.
‘We will miss her and will carry on her legacy of good eating! We love you Vernita Lee!’ She added.
Oprah Winfrey herself has said online that her mother ‘lived a good life’ and is ‘now at peace.’
Vernita died at her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Popular radio personality and life coach, Steve Harvey condoled with the family in a tweet. He said ‘our prayers and thoughts go to Oprah, her family and friends while using a broken heart emoji.’
