Panic as security men engage suspected hoodlums in gun battle in Anambra State

Panic has gripped residents around the Obosi end of the Second Niger Bridge, Onitsha, Anambra State over persistent gunshots along the road leading to the bridge.

 

 

The shoot-outs which began at about 9:30 am on Sunday were between some men in military attire and a group of boys, suspected to be criminals.

 

 

The hoodlums invaded the road, linking the yet-to-be commissioned Second Niger Bridge on two motorcycles and one tricycle, where they engaged the men in military uniform, who also came with a Hilux van, in a gun battle.

Thereafter, the hoodlums ran into the surrounding bushes, from where they engaged the operatives in exchange for bullets.

 

 

The situation had caused panic around the area as people remained indoors.

As of the time of filing this report at 11:40 am, the shoot-outs were still ongoing.

 

 

The reason why the hoodlums invaded the area could not be ascertained yet. But eyewitnesses around the community said they might have come to carry out an ulterior motive.

Meanwhile, there is panic in Owerri town over the kidnapping of Eze Jewel Ndenkwo, a famous traditional ruler in Imo state.

 

 

He was kidnapped in front of one of his businesses in Owerri; the state capital, around 7 pm on Friday.

 

 

The kidnapped monarch is the traditional ruler of Isiala Umudi autonomous community in the state’s Nkwerre Local Government Area.

 

 

He reportedly owns a number of businesses, including Udekings Nigeria Limited. He was allegedly kidnapped in front of his office at Tetlow, Owerri.

 

Criminality

 

 

His kidnappers have yet to make contact with his family.

 

 

Although the police spokesperson, CSP Micheal Abattam, has yet to respond to; messages seeking his comment on the incident, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy has; confirmed the incident, noting that the administration is; working to reduce crime and criminality in the state.
