The Nigeria Police Force has denied reports that its operatives are planning a raid across Lagos State. This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, Bala Elkana.
Indeed, rumours had circulated that a raid was imminent. The reports, which originated from a WhatsApp broadcast, claimed that the Police had planned the raid for Friday; February 7th, 2020 from 8pm. Further, it had warned residents to avoid staying out late in order to avoid falling victim.
Meanwhile, 1st News can report that the rumours had gone viral; after making the rounds on WhatsApp throughout Wednesday and Thursday.
However, Elkana debunked the rumoured raids as completely false, even as he accused those spreading it of mischief. The Police spokesman disclosed this on micro-blogging site, Twitter on Thursday, February 6th, 2020.
‘‘The rumour making the rounds on social media that the Police in Lagos State will carry out massive raids across the State tomorrow is completely false. Those spreading such fake news are mischievous, trying to create panic in the minds of people,” Elkana tweeted.

As a matter of fact, the rumoured raids by the Police may not be unconnected with a ban; recently enforced by the Lagos State Government on the operations of motorcycles and tricycles in the state.
The decision which came into force on Saturday, February 1st, 2020; had witnessed reactions from affected operators and Lagosians alike. In fact, riders of bike-hailing start-ups – Gokada and Max – had embarked on a peaceful protest in the wake of the ban. However, there have also been pockets of violent protests by alleged bike operators in areas such as Iyana Ipaja, Surulere and Ijora, among others, against the ban.
