The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Emabong Udoh, said Python Dance 2 and Crocodile Smile 2 exercises were successfully conducted. He said that the exercises, which were part of training activities of the army in 2017, helped to curtail criminal activities and other crimes in the country. Udoh stated this at the 2018 West Africa Social Activities (WASA) celebration of the Army, which ended late on Saturday in Dodan Barracks, Lagos. Read more

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday joined all sportsmen and sports-loving Nigerians to congratulate former Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, Adegboye Onigbinde, on his 80th birthday holding on Monday. INEC warns against hate speech (Punch)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned against hate speeches by political aspirants, party faithful and other stakeholders during political campaigns. Prof. Francis Ezeonu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Imo State, gave the advice at a one-day town hall meeting/sensitisation visit by Imo REC and his team to Nwangele Local Government area of Imo. Wastes’ war rocks Lagos (Vanguard)

Lagos State government is battling to restore sanity into wastes management in the state. 13,000 metric tons of wastes were generated daily in Lagos but the volume has, of recent, increased. Consequently, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, in 2017, signed the Environmental Management Protection Law to sanitise the environment. The law limits government’s role to wastes regulation. The wastes management aspect has been left for an environmental utility company, Visionscape Sanitation Services Limited, VSS, to handle under a 10-year franchise. Read more

UTME: Print notification slip from March 6, JAMB tells candidates (Guardian)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed candidates for the 2018 UTME to start printing their examination notification slip from Tuesday, March 6. The board’s Head of Media and Information Department, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said in Lagos on Sunday that arrangements had been concluded for the successful conduct of the exam scheduled to hold from March 9 to March 17. “With have successfully conducted the Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on Monday, February 26, and based on that, we can confidently say, we are good to go. FG spends N771 million to build 80 houses in Plateau (Guardian)

The Federal Government is sinking N771 million into building 80 houses in Plateau under the Federal Housing Programmed (FHP), according to Mr Julius Olurinola, FHP Zonal Coordinator (North-Central). Olurinola, who inspected work on the housing project located at Laminga village in Jos on Sunday, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was “very impressed” with the quality of work at the site. He commended the Plateau government for donating the 5.04 hectares of land for the project, and particularly lauded its collaboration with the federal government to execute the project. Read more

As anxiety over the fate of the over N100billion unclaimed dividends heighten, shareholders have impressed on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) the need to extend the deadline. It may be recalled that SEC announced February 28th deadline for shareholders to conclude e-payment registration for unclaimed dividends. According to SEC, the review of the progress in the e-dividend registration exercise, after the December 31, 2017 deadline, showed that there was still a great influx of shareholders desirous of mandating their bank accounts for payment of dividends electronically. Fuel subsidy at N774 million daily, says NNPC boss (Vanguard)

Few days after the NNPC turned down human rights lawyer, Femi Falana’s freedom of information request on how much the government was spending on subsidy, the corporation has revealed that it was subsidising the supply of petrol to the tune of N774 million every day. FG spends N2.8bn on Gbongan-Iwo Oyo road reconstruction, rehabilitation (Guardian)

The Federal Government says it has spent N2.8 billion on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Gbongan-Iwo-Oyo Road. Mr. Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, disclosed this on Saturday in Gbongan, Osun State, while inspecting the project. Fashola said that the road was awarded to Kopek Construction Company by the previous administration in 2011 at the cost of N6.9 billion. Represented by Mr Adetunji Adeoye, the South-West Director of the Ministry, Fashola said that Federal Government was committed to the speedy completion of the road. He said that the contract, with 18 months’ completion period, was delayed for three years by the previous administration due to delay in release of funds. Read more

Old Pilgrims to pay N163,000 levy, says NAHCON (ThisDay)

The National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) Saturday said prospective Nigerian pilgrims who have performed Hajj or Umrah in the last two years are to pay a compulsory levy of 2000 Saudi Riyals, an equivalent of N163,000. The Nollywood actor Kenneth Okonkwo has declared to contest the forthcoming governorship election in Enugu State as an APC candidate, describing the administration of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state as not working. N2.5bn goods destroyed as fire razes Enugu Timber Market (ThisDay)

Goods worth more than N2.5 billion as well as shops and other valuables were destroyed as late night fire gutted a section of Timber market, Kenyatta Enugu state. Police respond to reports of explosion in north-east London (Guardian)

Emergency services are responding to reports of an explosion in north-east London, the Metropolitan police has said. The explosion, in Romford, is not being treated as terror-related. Police, the fire brigade and the ambulance service are all on the scene of the incident. A cordon has been put in place around the affected building, which is on a parade of shops on Farnham Road, in the Harold Hill area. China official in hospital after catching falling girl (BBC)

A traffic official in China is recovering in hospital after suffering head injuries as she caught a child who fell from a fourth-floor window. Chen Zhongping hurried to help after she saw the three-year-old girl climbing out of an apartment window in the city of Kaili, Guizhou province. The girl’s grandmother had locked herself out with the child inside. Scared by the sounds of the locksmith, the girl climbed out of the window and fell into the arms of the official. She crashed into a rain canopy, slowing her down, but the official was still badly injured as the girl fell into her arms, said local reports. Read more
