Ronaldo moves closer to 700 career goals

Cristiano Ronaldo moved one strike away from his 700th career goal as Portugal edged closer to Euro 2020 with a 3-0 win against Luxembourg.

The veteran star hit his 94th goal for the Portuguese and took his overall career tally to 699 when he found the target in the second half after Bernardo Silva had opened the scoring in the first period.

The three points kept Portugal in second place in Group B, five points behind Ukraine who defeated Lithuania 2-0.

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva opened the scoring before Ronaldo chipped over Anthony Moris.

Valencia’s Goncalo Guedes completed the scoring just before full-time.

Ronaldo will have the chance to become just the sixth person to score 700 goals when Portugal travel to Ukraine on Monday.

Fernando Santos’ side can qualify with a win in Kiev if Serbia fails to win in Lithuania.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has described legendary Brazilian striker, Ronaldo Nazario as a better player than Cristiano and Lionel Messi.

Mourinho has enjoyed a stellar coaching career at a number of big European sides. Further, he has also had the opportunity of coaching top talents in his career. When asked to name the best player of his lifetime, Mourinho overlooked Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi.

Ronaldo, El Fenomeno, Cristiano and Leo Messi have had longer careers. They have remained at the top every day for 15 years.

“However, if we are talking strictly about talent and skill, nobody surpasses Ronaldo [Nazario].”
