Cristiano Ronaldo moved on to 99 international goals as Portugal beat Luxembourg 2-0 to seal qualification for Euro 2020.
Ronaldo tapped in a shot by teammate Diogo Jota that was just inches from going over the goal-line in the 86th minute, leaving the Juventus star one strike from the 100-goal mark.
Bruno Fernandes got Portugal’s first goal against the flow of play in the 39th minute when he scored from a long pass by Bruno Silva.
Luxembourg had outplayed Portugal until that point; dealing with the poor pitch conditions better than the defending European champions.
Portugal advanced to Euro 2020 in second place in Group B. Ukraine had already gone through as the group winners.
“We won’t be favourites but we are going there to win,” said Portugal coach Fernando Santos, whose side also won the inaugural Nations League this year.
“We are not the prettiest team but we have won two European tournaments in the last four years.”
Cristiano Ronaldo had taken his tally to 98 international goals with a hat-trick against Lithuania. The Portugal captain scored an early penalty before curling in a second.
Pizzi, Goncalo Paciencia and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva scored before the latter set up Ronaldo for his third.
Ronaldo’s ninth Portugal hat-trick takes him to within 11 goals of Iranian Ali Daei’s world-record 109
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has surprised a fan who was recording the Juventus star walking to his car. The incident happened while he was on international duty with Portugal.
Ronaldo moved towards the window of the vehicle and snatched the phone, much to the surprise of everyone.
In footage captured by Deportes Cuatro, Ronaldo immediately gave the device back in fits of laughter, in a moment the fan will never forget.
