Saraki distances self from APC

Nigerian users on Twitter, on Saturday, expressed surprise at the removal of the All Progressives Congress’ name from the official profile page of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

According to some users, the Senate President’s verified Twitter biography previously read, in part, “Member of the APC.” Read more

Rivers bans trailers, fuel tankers from Port Harcourt

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has ordered trailer and tanker drivers who park along the busy Azikiwe Road, close to the Government House in Port Harcourt, to move their trucks to Iriebe Trailer Park in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Wike maintained that the directive was necessary to ensure public safety and peace in the state capital. Read more

Police kill kidnapper, rescue one in Nasarawa

Police in Nasarawa State on Saturday killed a suspected kidnapper and rescued one person at the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa, following a gun battle.

Confirming the incident to SUNDAY PUNCH, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ismaila Numan, said the kidnapper, who was shot dead in a gun battle with the police was a second-year National Diploma student of architecture at the institution. Read more

Fire guts Lagos commerce ministry’s building

No fewer than four offices in the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Alausa, Ikeja, were gutted by fire on Saturday, while property worth millions of naira was reportedly destroyed.

The fire incident was the second in 24 hours in the Alausa area of the state. Read more

Prince Emiko is new Olu of Warri

Speculations about the health status of the traditional ruler of Warri Kingdom were on Saturday laid to rest as the Itsekiri nation announced the death of Ogiame Atuwatse II, the Olu of Warri, and announced Prince Godfrey Ikenwoli Emiko as the successor to the throne.

Nigerians have expressed surprise and utter disappointment that four months after the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, Boko Haram insurgency has remained a big issue in the country.

BoI secures AfDB’s $100m facility for SMEs

To aid its development financing objectives, especially to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the Bank of Industry (BoI), has secured a $100 million line of credit from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

According to the bank, the line of credit, which is designed for on-lending to SMEs engaged in export-oriented businesses, is the first of such foreign facility accessed by BoI after its reconstruction in 2001 out of the defunct Nigeria Industrial Development Bank (NIDB). Read more

Power generation falls by 356.8MW in three weeks

The modest gains recorded in the power sector over the past three months are being threatened by the activities of pipelines vandals, which have led to the fall in electricity generation by 356.8 megawatts within the last three weeks.

Power generation climbed to an all-time high of 4,810.7MW on August 25 this year, but latest figures from the Presidential Task Force on Power showed that it had fallen to 4,453.9MW as of September 16. Read more

NSE: Top 10 Stockbrokers Handled N104.115bn Transactions in August

The Nigerian Stock Exchange has disclosed that the activities of top 10 stock broking firms were responsible for 71.32 per cent of the total value of transactions recorded on the exchange for the month of August. The total value put at N104, 115,644,703.78 represented the transactions between August 3 and August 31.

The figure, which was contained in the Exchange’s Brokers Report for the month of August, showed that Rencap Securities Limited came first with transactions worth N18, 405billion, representing a 12.61per cent of the total transactions for the period under review. Read more

Meet Maureen Mmadu First Nigerian woman to coach top European club

MAUREEN Nkeiruka Mmadu was born on May 7, 1975 and hails from Onitsha in Anambra State. She is a Nigerian football coach and former midfielder. As a player, she most recently represented Avaldsnes IL, a First Division team based on Norway’s west coast. 4 Killed in Mali Attack Blamed on Jihadists

A gun attack blamed on jihadists in central Mali near the border with Burkina Faso left two policemen and two civilians dead on Saturday, security officials said.

The victims were killed “by armed Islamists in the village of Bih”, about five kilometres (three miles) from the Burkinabe border, a provincial police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official said the gunmen were travelling on motorcycle. Read more

ISIL Militants Kill Senior Egyptian General – Interior Ministry

Militants affiliated with ISIL shot and killed an Egyptian Interior Ministry brigade general overnight into Sunday in the North Sinai governorate, the ministry’s press service said.

The shooting took place in the governorate’s capital city of Arish, according to the press service. Read more

Pope Francis on Saturday descibed how he became emotional when he met a family of Syrian refugees who have been given shelter in the Vatican.

“There are wars, refugees who are escaping in this wave of migration away from wars,” he told reporters aboard the plane taking him from Rome to Havana to start his nine-day trip to Cuba and the United States. Read more

Jackie Collins, doyenne of the steamy Hollywood novel, dies at 77

Jackie Collins, the best-selling author of dozens of steamy novels who depicted the boardrooms and bedrooms of Hollywood’s power crowd, died on Saturday of breast cancer at age 77, her family said.

The British-born Collins, younger sister of actress Joan Collins, died in Los Angeles, said her spokeswoman Melody Korenbrot. Read more

U.S. and China in urgent talks on cybersecurity deal – NY Times

The United States and China have been engaged in urgent negotiations in recent weeks on a cybersecurity deal and may announce an agreement when President Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in Washington on a state visit on Thursday, the New York Times said on Saturday.

Citing unidentified officials involved in the discussions, the newspaper said the agreement could address cyber attacks on power stations, cellphone networks and hospitals. Read more

Female zookeeper dies after being attacked by tiger

A zookeeper has been killed in a “tragic incident” after being attacked by a tiger at a New Zealand zoo.

The staff member, reported to be a woman, was working at Hamilton Zoo about 320 miles north of the capital Wellington on the country’s North Island, on Sunday morning when she was attacked by the animal. Read more
